Best places in UK for a holiday at this time of year??

Hi All
Was wondering where the best places in the UK would be for the two of us,both of us have 4 days leave, was originally thinking of going to the USA but changed last minute.

Its now colder although still not too bad for most places although I was looking at any place within the Uk including Isle of Man, Isle of Wight , even Jersey.

I was looking at virtually any holiday , including an outdoors one,and some of the places which came up were

The Lake district
Edinburgh
Isle of Man
Isle of Wight
South Wales/Pembrokeshire
Snowdon
Devon/Cornwall

Not looking to rough it, wanted preferably to stay in a good hotel, maybe with outdoorsy places to go out to... but mostly looking at just chilling out

Havent much time deciding , so any ideas and views from all welcome on which places may be ideal

Thanks in advance

John

  • I'd avoid Cumbria right now!!

Devon's nice, but we get the worst of any rain or wind coming in - there's some lovely hotels B&B's - I'd look at the North coast or the edge of Dartmoor or Exmoor - places like Woolacombe, or furhter along, Hartland/Hartland point, and you could explore the coast path, which is stunning - be careful though - it needs walking boots and a sensible disposition - don't get blown off a cliff!

  • I think you should probably avoid the lake District at the moment! Much is going to depend on what you like to do but London at this time of year is great with free museums the displays in ths shops and the theatres and a wide range of hotels.

Outdors type holidays are going to be weather dependant but we did spend a lovely week at the begining of Novemeber on the North Yorkshire Moors visiting a different pub each night. We rented a cottage and it was very cosy and there should be no problem getting a rental at this time of year.

Another option would be somewhere like Swansea which has all the facilities of a city but proximity to world class baches on the Gower peninsula with cliff walks and beautiful scenery as well as up market hotels
  • I've just spent a night aboard in Whitby- and I love it there in the autumn/winter months. Sea, moors, history...it's desolate & beautiful, the people are warm & friendly...bliss.

I am going to Ireland in January and looking forward to it. I am aware that not everything will be open and it's going to be wet and probably cold, but I am still looking forward to it. I can only go away when it's not peak season because of where I work.

I love the rugged outdoors this time of year and plonk me on the coast big thick coat walk into the wind and rain back to a decent hotel for a hearty roast and a few pints of the local brew. Bamburgh on the east and Nefyn on the Welsh coast Saundersfoot South Wales -Perranporth in Cornwall,- Ullapool Scotland to name a few

If you don't mind the cold, I'd pick Edinburgh. It's a wonderful city with lots of walks both in the city and nearby.
