I looked on the phpbb website and it appears to me that you download the forum then upload it to your domain. So, just to clear things up, if i buy a domain can i upload the forum files to it (with a hosting package) and have the forum on my own domain.

Install infomation= http://www.phpbb.com/support/documents.php?mode=install

Download= http://www.phpbb.com/downloads.php

Please help a n00b in need:o

Thankyou,
A:I:T

Your hosting package will need to support php and have at least one free sql database. A lot of hosting packages provide tools to easily set up things like phpBB and other forum software, blogs, CMS, etc - check out some different packages and ask them what support and tools the provide before you sign up
  • If your web host has cPanel or Fantasico, you can probably install the script directly without having to get the downloads from the phpBB website. All part of your web hosting costs. Takes minutes to install and a bit longer to configure but fairly straightforward. As Darksun says, you need PHP and one SQL database.

As others have said, you should be able to do a quick install from the Host's control panel (cPanel) or Fantastico. If you do though, be prepared to upload some patches, as Fantastico doesn't always provide the latest release of software. And since phpbb has been frequently hacked, you really need to keep on the ball with latest releases to keep your site secure.
Of course, I may just be talking b****cks!

i have to option to install from my cpanel but when i do and i go to the ftp folder to add themes and mods to the forum, i cannot see them, i have to set my folder options to show hidden files, i think it is easier uploading your self if you know what you are doing,

Thankyou everyone, does anyone know of any sites which offer relitivly cheap hosting which will support this?
  • Try http://www.dataflame.co.uk/index.html or PM me for the email address of the host that I use (personal friend). Dataflame, however, should be more than adequate. Go for one of their Unix packages - the £2.49 a month looks good for starters.

thanks, i had a quicky look at the site and it looks great thankyou.
So this site meets all the requirerments for the phpbb forum then?

    Cheers.
  • Yes it does. PHP and MySQL database (see "Developer Features" on link below) and it comes with cPanel Admin Control Panel.

To save time, you can also buy your domain name through them.

    http://www.dataflame.co.uk/domains.html

Or use this domain seller (slightly cheaper for ".co.uk" but dearer for ".com")

    http://www.123-reg.co.uk/

    Good luck!

try Simple Machines Forum it is much better than phpbb and will automatically install themes and mods for you rather than editing the actual files themselves, plus its free, all you need then is some php enabled webspace!, failing that why dont you try php-fusion
Like what I said? click thanks!:rotfl: :rotfl:
