Natwest- Direct Debit

Hi all,
I was going to have a few days off from the BR process until next week because I was getting stressed but have come across a problem...
To save the fees etc for the BR I cancelled all my debt (Loans and CC) direct debits online and they all showed as cancelled....
My husband goes to use his card this evening and it doesnt work... I check online and the loan payment has been taken (bank is natwest, loan is with natwest). The direct debit is now showing as 'active'.
So I ring them and I have been told that I cannot cancel a direct debit for my loan without speaking to them first, also the gentleman I spoke to informed me that "to be honest they probably won't let you cancel it without a valid reason, this is in your terms and conditions".
So basically my question is ... WHAT THE HELL? how do I stop this payment being made this month to help us with saving the fees for the BR on the 22nd December?
I honestly thought that I could cancel a direct debit on my account if I wanted to... this seems very odd to me...
Thanks as always guys

What about asking them to change the date of the dd instead, this usually gives you a months grace, although if it has already been taken out then may be too late - not sure. I had the same problem though had account and loan with hsbc and could not cancel it.0

argh no! do you get paid again before 22 dec? if so, when you get paid take your wages out before they take the next loan payment, and just keep track of what you spend it on in case the OR asks.

You need to open another bank account pronto and have all your income transferred to that account. There is nothing you can do to stop Natwest taking payment out of your account even if it makes you go overdrawn. Try the Coop, you can open the account over the phone - ask for a cashminder account otherwise open a basic account at Barclays first thing Monday morning. In the meantime take out all your money from Natwest up to your overdraft limit.

We do get paid before the BR....the day before
so was hoping to get it ready before then, we should just be ok before then and hopefully the account will have been transfered to the Co-op before we get paid so should be straight forward enough. I will speak to Natwest monday though and change the date to after the 22nd December just to be on the safe side.
I'm just a bit shocked that they can refuse to cancel the DD. I obviously didn't read the T&C's very well....or ever think that it might apply to me
Thank you

I wouldn't count on anything being safe in that account. It happened to me with Barclays.

Natwest did the same to me it got to the point where as soon as i was being paid they were taking their monies owed and my essential payments for bills and food etc were getting bounced (with extra charges) they seem to like to make life impossible.
even now 3 months after BR they send me the odd statement to say my loan payments are coming out of my maxed out overdraft even though i've spent most of my phone credit relaying my BR ref number to them!! -
Good luck for the 22nd.0 -
Thank you, I have heard bad things about Natwest. I have been an amazing customer for them for years and years AND YEARS but when I asked about a payment break or similar they just said no. When I asked if I could extend the term to make payments lower... they said no... what they offered was to take out a new loan, on a higher interest rate (as my credit file was worse) and get a couple of extra ££ back to make the payments for a couple of months, then the payments were going to be £80 per month more! Honestly its silly. Now I ask to cancel the direct debit and they say no! jeez!
Anyway hope they stop bugging you soon joobie and they get the hint
