  • hi we've got wooden and take along in the house we did have the tomy blue track too but parted with it recently as my ds is getting a bit big now and he's started collecting hornby. all the sets have had their moneys worth of play and my dd has started playing with the take along now. can't decide which is best which doesn't help but whichever set you choose i'm sure it will go down a treat
  • My son has just turned 17 and we still have his wooden train bits that he got when he was 3. It is only used now when we have visiting younger family and friends but is still in great condition. We started of with Brio and just kept adding to it as it was compatible with most wooden track. I hope this helps...
  • My son is Thomas mad too! He has My First Thomas, as he got this when he was just 1. Its fab for younger kids, and very hard wearing! He has about 20 trains/characters and soem track & sheds. Its also the cheapest. For xmas this year, we have got him a few Take Along sets. I think you need to decide which set you want to go with, and look for bargains in that set. Or else you cold end up with lots of different sets that cant be used all together!

They have the wooden brio 'thomas the tank' sets in TK maxx for less than half price at the min, although, I think stock changes in different areas, it was in central MK that I saw them. £24.99 instead of £59.99. I got the horses set for my nephews as they don't like thomas! lol!

I would def go for the wooden trains as they are great, all fit together, and can be used for years. We still have all ours from when we were little, and it was well used then for three of us, now my DD and nephews play with it all the time. You can pass it on and it is timeless, the design has changed very little in years!
  • We have a three year old, obsessed by cars and trains from birth it seems so gone thru the lot. We have the wooden track and trains, cheapest wooden track possible but he loves Thomas Train sets so got a few of them.

Recently I bought him the older blue train track sets but found them very flimsy.., with a rough three year old the connectors, flimsy bridges whatever don't last long.

For Christmas we have/are buying him the update, trackmaster as it seems a lot more solid. We managed to get Trackmaster Thomas At Echo Cave set from argos-clearancebargains on ebay for £21.99 (£39.13 on Amazon).

For the trains (he's broken the last lot) we are buying four battery operated sets. Tried Ebay, then amazon (£8.99 each but £1.76 each for postage from MrToymasteruk on amazon).

We rang the retailer and found out he had his own website and offered free postage for orders over £30 so we ended up paying £38 for the four trains rather than the £45 we would have paid on Amazon including postage. The individuals trains were £9.25 on the traders own website each so 26p more lol.., but it worked out cheaper with the free postage. The cheapest price I have found on ebay for the trains was £9.99 plus postage.., so I think http://www.mrtoybox.co.uk/ was the more economical option.

I hope this helps someone trying to bring a smile to their children's face he he!
  • we ended up going with trackmaster..........seems to have the best play value as i thougth the take along sets look abit young.we got the sodor adventure set for £49.99 instead of £99.99 in toys r us http://www.toysrus.co.uk/Babies-R-Us/Toys/Cars-and-Trains/Trackmaster-Thomas-Super-Sodor-Adventure-Set(0046185)
and its huge! i liked it because it has a little road bit aswell! got a thomas that 'steams' abit steep at £19.99 but very cute! also the tidmouth sheds remote control thomas set for £29.99 in toysrus so she can connect the sets! am now wantin, sorry she wants cranky crane add on and a set that puts the coal into the trains!!!!!!!!!!!! that isnt even her main pressie, lol, shes getting a ride on jeep  i do love the thomas stuff now though!! need a good value playmat.............any ideas????

Two of my boys were thomas mad, I found TK MAXX were brilliant for the Thomas wooden sets and often trains and accesories turn up there too. Ebay sellers can be very good value for wooden and take along trains. I likes the take along ones as they have smart magnets so they boys could just hook the trains up and go without the frustration of the magnets repelling, lol. But they ended up with a big mixed set in the end.
  • lol, I have become obsessed with thomas for my grandson. He is getting a few basic bits from us for christmas and I decided on the learning curve wooden ones. Oh they are so tactile. They are expensive so I bought the track second hand and a new pair of carriages from amazon and also a new engine from ebay. I am getting him the battery operated thomas for his birthday. Its brilliant and oh so easy to get presents now
  • Lol, my little girl loves this type of stuff too - it is only now through nursery she is learning cars are for boys and dollies are for girls :( It makes me a little sad really as i loved the fact she was into everything, wooden train sets are a massive hit with her as are dolls houses.

definitely wooden, started with a simple circle when DS1 was 2 and he still plays with them at 12. DS2 has now 'inherited' them but DS1 is very happy to spend time building tracks with him...

we had a couple of sets from Tesco with wooden rail and plastic road pieces that linked together using a level crossing, but I think it must be at least 8 years ago.
