Battery prices aren't bad in Halfords with the trade card. See the trade card thread for details on how to get one (you don't need to be in the trade as such).

A trickle charge would be a good place to start IMO. If it's not one that stops automatically you want to charge until the battery is gassing (a fizzing noise). Once it's been fully charged you can leave it disconnected from the charger a few hours and test the voltage with a multimeter. If I remember correctly a decent battery will be about 12.6v plus. 12.5v or less and it may be new battery time.
  • get to motor factors they have cheaper batteries than halfords, even with a trade card the motor factors is your best best just tell hem that your strapped any possibilty of trade price! get them to check battery first though (test) when engine running the battery test will read 14.5v if alternator is ok 12 v if aternator is knackerd if reading 14.5 and then the engine is cut off then battery reads low i.e 10.v and dropping on the meter bat needs replaceing as not holding charge.

As an extremly basic alternator test put your lights on without starting the engine, when you start it the lights should brighten up, put your rear heater on the lights should not dim. Far better to test it properly with a mulitimeter, and very easy to do.

If it's stop starting, are you cranking straight away, or waiting for the heater light to go out? If the engine is hot, it'll start straight away, you only need to wait if it is cold. Clean up the battery terminals as well, it can help.

It certainly did ! Been starting fine today, off to work in a bit so will see how it gets on tonight.
  • Maybe have another curry, you can afford it as you have not had to buy a battery . . .
  • Be careful Bosch batteries don't like pie and chips.
