what do i need to record from the telly

My dad has bought a samsung lcd telly, with freeview

he had a dvd player, and his old video has been thrown out.

He said that he wants a digital tv recorder,

does anyone know of a decent cheapish one of these, he only wants it to tape the horse racing on a saturday afternoon, and the odd programe at night so it wouldn't be hammered

thanks

Im not a techie but I spent some time looking at these recently. I got a HUMAX 9300T - it has 120 hours recording time and it records onto a hard disc, so no discs for him to buy. It has freeview built in which means it can record two programmes at the same time and he can still watch a third :)

The important thing for me though, was that it was easy to use and it is :)

It is one Id never even heard of before but it gets all the accolades and recommendations when you actually research.

John Lewis and Amazon have them and if he isnt going to record as much, there is one below this model which has a smaller hard drive. I think I paid £160 for mine.

Just looked and the one below it is £118 PVR9150T

Thats the same one chris :). I think my paste and copy must have left off the first "9".

Its very easy to set up but I did buy an HDMI connection or something (son told me to, said it gives a better picture). Im sure the salesman in comet will sell you one, its not very expensive. Tell dad to hang on to his dvd player though as he will need that aswell. This is just a recorder with freeview built in so you can record any of the freeview channels. (and then erase them when you have watched them). If dad gets dvds of films and so on, he will still use his dvd player. We are doing the same.

This probably won't be a pronlem ..but make sure to ask for one wth freeview ...some don't have it and they sell 'em cheap so they look a bargain ...which they aren't they are out of date.

    Me again sorry

Tesco have this for the same price, and can find a discount code to get a bit more off,

    http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-5852.aspx

but it says this on the webpage
Please note that this recorder does not have a HDMI connection as stated in the catalogue, sorry for any inconvenience.

Now i'm not techi, so is this important, comet or argos do not have the above quote on their web page.

So far my dad has a lcd samsung with freeview

and he will be keeping his dvd player.

He won't be getting sky now or in the future, so does this matter

    thanks

He's seen this in tesco, is it any good?

if it's a small-ish tv (under 32 inches), he probably wouldn't see the quality difference going through scart or HDMI, so I wouldn't worry too much.
  • Thanks the telly is 32 inches

any ideas about the other box from tesco?

    thanks

Chris, its the same one again - the code for the one I recommended and that in tescos and comet are all the same :)! The HDMI thing is what I said Id bought, it was only £8 or something you use it instead of the normal scart lead thing, son told me it upgrades the picture when you use the box. I also have Samsung LCD freeview HD ready tv. This box is for people who dont have sky but have freeview, like me and your dad.

Thats the box you need - Humax PVR9150T 160G Digital

Thats strange just went to look at your link again and its changed from the Humax to a Thompsons. Its defo the Humax you want.
