Martin Martin You are Wrong Now Virgin Media

Virgin Media are now charging for 0844 over rider provider numbers .

I notice on the site it still says its free . But its not eg I call a UK land line 21.30 hrs o8442050505 which offer call at yes 1/2 P a Min .

So why did the call of 26 min cost 0,76p .

should have been 10p connection and 13p for the over rider bit 23p in total .

Virgin say they are charging , could others please check your bills ,

and inform Martin that we are not saving , any way round it comments appreciated .

Many Thanks .

The MSE CallCheckers quote the cost of calls using BT residential landlines.

Virgin Media charges considerably more for calls to 0844 ranges of numbers (6 times more - 3p/minute* instead of
½p/minute for calls to the 0844205 range for example). They didn't get the reputation as being the most expensive voice telephone company in the country for nothing.

    * Fractionally less than 3p at the moment because of the temporary reduction of VAT from 17
    ½% to 15%.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Where exactly does it say its free to call access 0844 numbers?

Its not as if the call checker and the main article dont make it clear enough that different rates may apply.

"Always double-check prices on providers websites before calling.Prices may vary from non-BT landlines"

    http://callchecker.moneysavingexpert.com/ukcallchecker/

    "Non-BT landlines

Call prices may vary from non-BT landlines, it's always worth checking your bill to see exactly what you're charged before using one of these providers excessively."

    http://callchecker.moneysavingexpert.com/intcallchecker/#bt

    Also see http://www.05pence.co.uk/rates.php

"05pence gives you a tariff announcement based on the rate that applies when calling from a BT landline. "

Consider using http://www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates.php via their 0808 Freephone Number.

Just 5p connection and 1p a minute, and unlike 0844 access numbers you dont normally pay until your connected.

0.76p for a 26 minute call is very cheap. You thought it would cost 23p but it cost more than 22p less? Seems like a bargain and I wouldn't be complaining about it.

0844 has never been free. Only 0500 and 080 numbers are free from landlines.

Virgin make all their money from people calling mobiles or 08 numbers, 0845 calls can be up to 20 times the cost of the same call on BT, and only offer it inclusive if you pay for your minutes up front.

It's one of those decimal point mistakes; it means 76p (= £0.76)

I think Kim knew that but was (pardon the pun) making a point!

The words "Virgin Media are now charging for 0844 over rider provider numbers" sounds like you expected them for free.

According to Virgins price tariff an 0844205 number is a PG22 priced call.

According to Virgins price list a PG22 call is 9.79p connection and 2.98p per minute.

Expensive it might be, but their charges are on their web site for anyone to check.

The way to get cheaper calls with Virgin is to sign up with say 18185, then phone them on their 0808 freephone number (totally free with Virgin), then you get access to 18185's cheap calls such as 1/2 p a min to Canada. Full list here.
