making razors last longer

Options
I was told years ago that a magnetic will keep a razor blade sharp, therefore you would'nt throw away disposable razors so quickly.

Can someone tell me if this is true or was I drunk and talking to the mad pigeon woman at the time?

Hmm, not sure whether it works or not, but googled it and found this link

It reckons blades don't get blunt, they get bent and distorted and the magnet straightens them out again.

I did a bit more digging and found that the magnetic sharpener is nothing more than snake oil. My own belief, before researching this, was that the blade becomes blunt by the loss of metal from the sharp edge as you shave. You can see this phenomenon in woodworking tools where the blades become visibly rounded after prolonged use. The magnetic device claims to use a magnet to straighten the blade using the same process that causes transformers to hum. Firstly, the blade doesn't need straightening! Secondly, the strength of the magnet would have to be huge to cause a permanent deformation of the blade.

The best way to make your blades last longer is to ensure your beard is thoroughly wet before you start. Use plenty of warm water and a good shaving foam or gel.

Sorry Wiggers but you are wrong. Check your facts and what you write before you post please. I would be interested to know just what you've based your "facts" on before you made your post.

If you are going to rebut someones claim then provide a counter argument to back up your skepticism, calling into question what Wiggers has said is pointless unless you can offer evidence to the contrary of what he has said.

Sorry, John T, let Wiggers back his claims. Read the whole thread of google answers and get a balanced opinion. His "I am right" post doesn't provide his proof. I suggest he reads about the invention and study the patent.

I'm an engineer, I studied metallurgy at university as part of my degree. I've read both sides of the claims. Please feel free to spend your money on the magnetic device if you think it works. I won't be buying one anytime soon.

edit: I can only find one US patent granted to anyone by the name of Hastie and that was a William. Can you provide more details of where I can find the patent?

I remember an advert once where someone was selling little pyramids to keep your razors in because the 'awesome power' of the egyptian pyramid keeps your razor sharp.........................

................ the same bunkum as keeping your razor next to a magnet!

    Lol

Here's my tuppence worth - Remember hearing an interview on the radio some time ago with someone from Gillette. He said that actually to keep your razor sharp and prolong use you should shave with cold water - if your water is hot it makes the blades buckle more and they wear out much more quickly.

I have no scientific knowledge so I can't verify this!
