Climate scientists accused of 'manipulating global warming data'

Some of the world’s top climate scientists have been accused of manipulating data on global warming after hundreds of private emails were stolen by hackers and published online.

One of the emails under scrutiny, dated November 1999, reads: "I've just completed Mike's Nature [the science journal] trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie, from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline."

The e-mail messages, attributed to prominent American and British climate researchers, include discussions of scientific data and whether it should be released, exchanges about how best to combat the arguments of skeptics, and casual comments — in some cases derisive — about specific people known for their skeptical views.

In several e-mail exchanges, Kevin Trenberth, a climatologist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and other scientists discuss gaps in understanding of recent variations in temperature. Skeptic Web sites pointed out one line in particular: “The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t,” Dr. Trenberth wrote.

I really don't know what to make of all this. I am a skeptic on this subject but I never thought it was conspiracy on the scale of what is being suggested. If the information is genuine there is going to have to be some serious questions asked.

yes , I'm interested to see how this develops as well, hope the information that has been obtained is proved to be untampered with by the group that " discovered" it

Ok if the earth isn't warming what causing the poles ice sheet to break up and Glaciers to retreat. Why don't we get snow like I remember from my child hood days.
Ok a couple of scientist played with figures to make there point stronger. You don't need to look at figures to se this planet is warming just look around you. Plus there plenty of others who have'nt.

I don't think ANYONE is denying that the planet has been warming (Mars has been too !) - but there is still considerable doubt in many minds as to exactly what man's role in this might be.
CO2 rises when the planet gets warmer, however there is still no PROOF that this is the cause and not an effect.

The favourite quote on this subject from most of the man-made global warming fraternity is that "there is a consensus" on this subject.
A consensus is not proof. A few hundred years ago there was an overwhelming consensus that the earth was flat and that the Sun went round the Earth - how true did that turn out to be?

First, "cooking" the infamous hockey stick curve, now doing the same with other figures which don't go their way - what an honest reputable bunch !

Well you don't rarely to have to be a genius to figure out that pumping gasses into the atmosphere in unnaturally way will have some kinda of effect. Plus when they say leading researches they talking about a bunch of researches at one institution typical Torography Publication. If you use Meta testing to look at all the Research into climate change and compare thus statically removing the fiddled and falsified statics it'll still show a positive link between climate change and human activity.

The fact of the matter is that yes the earth may be warming naturally but we've never been in situation before where so much know greenhouse gasses are being pumped into the atmosphere on top of that and i think its foolish to play "God" with a system we dont fully understand.



Not to mention the sort sightedness of depending in an energy source that is finite not infinite. Just look at the energy crisis we have in this country from pretending that the north sea gas reserves are not going to run out.

I cant remember who or the exact quote is but it goes a little something like this "Life on this plant will carrying on regardless there been plenty of other large scale disasters in the past of life has continued the question is will we survive"

Also To compare scientific research to made up stuff by religious people is unfair. Scientific research depends on probability of something being true absolute proof is impossible but its work on system of burden of proof and the durden of proof points very strongly toward man made activity causing global warming.

What we suffer from human being is that our mind has evolved form time when were only lived on average 25year at the so we are unable to fully plan in advanced. Coupled with a large vested interest in not changing, The research against human climate is usually a very good example of how if you follow the money you'll get to the truth

As of course is the research to prove that human causes are the reason for Global warming.

The problem is that any body of scientists can be 'bought'. Their funding, and thus their salaries, depend these days on stating what their backers want to hear.

I have absolutely no idea who is correct on how much Homo sapiens contributes to global warming, and indeed how to quantify the dangers; and neither have any of you lot!!

Scandalous! The whole idea of science is that you can back data with FACTS - but seems it has become a faith based system. MMGW pedallers are no better than creationalists :rolleyes:

Anyone else concerned about the lack of news coverage? I can't believe it is not news worthy, or maybe it will be swept under the carpet and forgotten?

I hope it doesn't get swept under the carpet. There seems to be evidence that the CRU deleted emails relating to a FOI request after that request was received - this is very serious and I hope the information commissioner investigates.
