Identity Theft - (Nearly) Tax Credit Fraud

I have recieved the same letter today. Is there no way under the Data Protection Act or something, we could find out more details of what has gone on? After all, it is fraud being committed in our names?...

Just it worries me what else this person has, where they could have go it from, and what else they might try to do in my name.

I am a registered childminder and have been contacted by both HMRC and also Student Bursary providers for every single one of the children I care for who's parents are claiming childcare costs. Most of my fellow childminders have also.

Hope you find nothing else untoward Rollerman and Elfin Marvel.

You may not have to provide proof of your income but if what you declare on your Tax credit annual declaration doesn't tally with the income information submitted by the benefits agencies, P14's submitted by employers or what you declare on your tax return at the end of the tax year then it will be picked up and you will be required to explain yourself. It won't necessarily be picked up immediately but it will be picked up.

• Can anyone shed any light on tax credit fraud and what information the fraudsters may have on me? Given I have never applied for any kind of state benefit I have no idea how easy/difficult it is to obtain them, nor do I know what information you must provide.

The only REAL info they need to make the claim is your nino, name and dob. They do not need your actual income or empl dtls, they would make these up to get most financial gain. This info could be found by going through rubbish bins, intercepting your mail, your laptop theft, etc.

• Should I send off the information to Experian or perhaps try another credit agency?

Experian (IMO) are very reliable, I have used them before although not needed to send docs as I was at my present address for a number of years. Also the tax credit helpline are now working with experian to help limit identity fraud.

• I have, in my view, a good credit profile, no debts ever (excepting mortgage) I have always earnt my money before I spend it, so what can I do to ensure that whatever information has been stolen from me that from a financial and personal perspective any impact from this can be mitigated?

I don;t have much advice on this except ckeep any eye on bank accounts and credit cards and on your credit profile (experian), these will show all activity and if you don;t recognise them you would question them with the bank/credit card/other company.

Identity theft is a terrible and frustrating crime. My purse was stolen and my cards were used, I got the money back but it took a while. I am hoping someone else will give you more information.
