From memory acorns need a lot of preparation. If you have a copy of "Food for free" they'll be listed in there.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Foragers; don't forget when you are foraging to throw the odd foraged fruit into the hedgerows for foragers of the future. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0

Went to get some more sloes today with my friend but our session was cut short when we were flashed at by a 15 year old boy!
He looked a bit crestfallen when the pair of us burst into hysterical laughter

Hi over the last 6 months or so I've been forgaing on a regular basis, using it to supplement my diet and support a very low budget. I eat a veggie diet so it's ideal.
Summer has been good, with apples, blackberries, nettles, dandelions and crab apples foraged so far.
I'm looking to get some more advice on how to spot more foods, especially in the colder weather, but I guess there will be less available?
I'd like to take a free course because I think it is good to have a personal guide. I've looked at books and some online sites but the advice seems to be it is better to get some help. It's easy to get it wrong.
I've done some research in my region (Yorkshire) and couldn't find any free help. There is someone who runs a couple of hrs course for about £15 but it won't be that near me it's in another area a bus ride away.
What can you suggest to help me get some advice off someone who knows what they are doing - especially for my local area?
Also are there any recommendations about how to cook or prepare foraged foods.
Appreciate any ideas.

Elderberry wine, I have never made it, but I did taste some that had been set aside for about 10 years and was like a very rich sherry.
There are a lot of recipes around, but this one looks fairly simple:

A small sweet chestnut tree had dropped early so I collected a few dozen :j And a few dozen acorns, six crap abbles, some water mint, a big parasol mushroom and maybe 100g of what i think are rowan berries but not 100%.
Will do cabbage with bacon and chestnuts, little chestnut soup, acorns in stew, crab apple crumble and a jelly test if they are rowan.
Also think I saw white rowan berries but couldn't find much searching online on my phone at the time.
ohh have you found a new fruit?:rotfl:life is like a loo roll. the nearer the end you get, the faster it goes.0 -
