  • I was watching them forage on the beach - until they emptied their buckets out to show what they'd collected and the dad said they'd found a live cockle....which his daughter had volunteered to eat  ....that's when I switched over for a few minutes! When I switched back, the father was cooking some samphire in a cream sauce....which the presenter said tasted delicious!

They showed a clip of tomorrow's prog where they forage in Sheffield and it showed the family collecting apples in a blanket while someone was shaking the tree!

I've just got back from a lovely walk in the woods with my dogs. Had an unexpected day off, so decided to take the dogs to the woods where we don't often go. While we were walking, I noticed quite a few beefsteak fungi growing on the trees. I always have a nylon bag in a pouch attached to my car keys so I picked some and when I got home I found I'd got just over a kilo!! Can't wait to make a gorgeous "mushroom" risotto with some of it. YUM!!

lucky you :D I wouldn't have a clue what was safe to eat & what wasn't so wouldn't dare pick any. What a lovely treat for those who do know what they are looking at & well done for grabbing them.

No not that sort of crabs .... !

I hope I don't offend anyone here but I have a serious question. I try to cut down my food bill as much as possible but feed me and the family the best possible quality food. For this reason I have my own allotment and I also like to have a forage around hedgerows. I'm in the process of getting a couple of chickens. I also have a couple of ferrets and a running dog for the rabbits (all legally done with landowners permission etc).

However, whilst I live by the coast and fish, I have this urge to try for lobsters and crabs. However I'm not really sure where to start. I know I need a lobster/crab pot and believe I can place these in rocks at low tide and retrieve on the next tide, however has anyone got any tips? Also where can I get lobster pots cheaply? I'd be grateful if anyone can offer any help on this or indeed on any other foraging activities.

I can't help you with your crabs (sorry!) but if you're interested in foraging you might want to keep an eye out for the next book in the River Cottage series. It's called Edible Seashore: River Cottage Handbook No.5, it'll be getting released on the 4th May. I've got the first three books in the series and think they're brilliant so hopefully this one will be too :)
