My friend is a single parent with a 6 month old, is on income support and has a pre payment gas meter with British Gas. Now the weather has changed, the heating has to be on for approx 3-4 hours a day. It is costing her approx £30 a week  and she cannot afford it. I thought i read somewhere that she is entitled to help either from the government or British Gas themselves. However i can't find any info on it anywhere. Can anyone tell me if such a scheme exists, or is it just wishfull thinking on my part?

£30 a week is not very much. Remember she would have been saving up some money over the summer when the heating was not needed. If she didn't put this aside then suggest to her that she put the money in the meter every week even when it is not used to build up her credit. Also, as it is now raining I presume it will have warmed up - make sure she isn't unnecessarily using the heating now it is warmer (but make sure she continues to put instalments in the meter).

Check the comparison sites - use prepayment as both current and future payment type - there should be cheaper options than British Gas.

Alternatively she can switch to a credit meter for the best prices.

How did you conclude that £30 per week is not much?

£30 a week is a fortune, its £1560 over a year - ouch! My parents waste a lot of energy: think t shirts even in the dead of winter, in a 3 bed semi. Their gas bills came to about that last year. Their electric bill was something else too, but thats only because they hate CFL bulbs :(

Why on earth should anyone get cheaper/special rate gas?

    She needs to economise.

As an example,i use gas for heating/hot water and cooking. I dont have a nice new high efficiency boiler. My quarterly bill in October was £57.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
