cancelling theatre tickets?

My brother booked tickets for Les Mis in London (where he lives) for December when Im due to visit. However, he booked the tickets as a surprise for me not knowing it clashes with other plans ive made.
The theatre have said we cant cancel the tickets and get a refund and wont even let us switch dates. And I read on lastminute.com that theatre tickets are notoriously difficult to cancel
Is there no way around this? It seems awfully unfair, its not even short notice since the show is in mid december! I feel bad because he's spent quite a bit of money on them, any help appreciated!!

Hi webbiewebbie,
Which company did your brother buy the tickets for Les Mis from? Is it from the actual theatre (Delfont Mackintosh) themselves of ticketmaster? If its Delfont Mackintosh then you can generally exchange the tickets for another day, if its another agency is could be quite difficult as most tickets have a no refund or exchange policy Im afraid to say.

if you cant return them (which is pretty much standard practice) try listing them on whatsonstage.coms ticket exchange http://whatsonstage.viagogo.co.uk/MFW#105 - 2015 Overpaid £8095 / 2016 Overpaid £6983.24 / 2017 Overpaid £3583.12 / 2018 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2019 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2020 Overpaid £2583.12/ 2021 overpaid £1506.82 /2022 Overpaid £2975.28 / 2023 Overpaid £2677.30 / 2024 Overpaid £2173.61 Total OP since mortgage started in 2015 = £37,286.86 2025 MFW target £1700, payments to date at April 2025 - £1712.07..0

There is an ethical theatre ticket return site called scarletmist. Try that.0

Can you change your other plans perhaps? I know you may not want to but it might be something you need to start thinking about."A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0

You could sell them on ebay as it is such a popular show.Make £2 a day challenge - doing well so far.0

Same thing happened to me, but I sold them easily on Ebay for the same price I bought them, so many people were interested I could even have made a profit if I was so minded. I think it's because a lot of people book breaks in London last minute, then find they can't get a decent theatre ticket, so look on Ebay. Good luck.0
