parents bought a new computer with windows 7. pc world set everything up and i've been trying to get it on internet.

cant get networks to open, modem is plugged in fine but everytime we try to connect to internet it says cannot connect. when you try to diagnose it says local area connection problems.

phoned talk talk (internet provider) they said its lan card thats not properly installed, phoned pc world and they said its cables or talk talk!!!

can you plug another laptop into the modem using the same cable and test that independently (or plug the laptop into a known good router.

worth checking your browser settings or check connectivity with another program that uses the internet but is not a web browser (eg skype, outlook, an autoupdating AV program etc).

is it safe to assume you have an 'always on' type modem you plug into with an ethernet cable so all isp settings are stored on the modem rather than the laptop (this would not be the case with eg a usb modem)
  • Networking is very difficult subject.
Networks cant open - meaningless, sorry but need more info.
Do you have a broadband router or a USB dongle?
Is the lan card installed and drivers installed for Windows 7?

    thanks for your replies.

We i think have established it maybe a problem with our wires lol... :o

My dad had put an extension from his bedroom to the study, I plugged the modem straight into the bedroom line and then my laptop into it and it works, but my laptop doesnt in the study, says as above unable to connect.

So were thinking this is the problem, thing is my dad asked the advice of the pc world guy and he sold him the wire!
