A new vegetable for those potato grow sacks
This year I attempted to grow potatoes in those plastic grow sacks. (You know - the ones advertised in newspapers showing hundreds of potatoes growing in them :rotfl:) Well, next year I'm going to try something different which I think will work. I'm going to grow Mooli (the long white radish-type vegetable). We eat a lot in salads and stir fries but they're not always easy to get hold of if you don't live near an ethnic food store.
The deep sacks should be ideal for keeping them slug free and with a 2 month sowing to harvest period, I reckon I should be able to get two crops from my containers. I've grown them previously in my vegetable patch but as the roots grow to a depth of around 12 inches they need deeply dug stone-free soil so potato sacks should be ideal. I meant to grow them this year and have the seeds, but never got around to sowing them.
I like the idea of growing them in pots, I remember seeing monster in a magazine, as long and thick as a full grown womans leg!
Nice video, I can't believe they have only been growing for 2 months! Seems a nice funny guy as well.
I was going to grow them for stews.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
I'd never heard of them to be honest.0

I've got hessian tattie bags which are equally as useless:D, so I thought I might try Oca on them. Never tried mooli but definately looks interesting.0

Well - mooli is one vegetable I'm not keen on personally. But the basic idea is worth trying - so what other vegetables do you think could be grown in these potato growsacks?0

I take it from the above postings that those potato sacks don't work? I wanted to try them next year as I don't have a lot of room to plant potatoes in my garden.0

Have never tried Mooli, but went to Lidl yesterday and there were some fantastic-looking ones on sale. Didn't get any to try as had gone there to stock up pantry with tins and storecupboard stuff. Re potato sacks....we have tried potatoes in old compost sacks and we did get a crop, but no more than if we'd used the usual buckets & big pots so we stuck them in the ground this year.2025's challenges: 1) To fill our 10 Savings Pots to their healthiest level ever

Could I try carrots or parsnips in the potato bags? I had a good year the year before last but this year was rubbish - they all came out looking exactly the same! even the rooster red ones came out the same as all the otheres lol0

you can grow carrots & parsnips in the bags or they do well pots...
try baby carrots & parsnips by pulling them up sooner & seed sowings can be closer which can be planted successionally for more regular crops
also baby leeks can work well like this in pots...
enjoy..0
