I got the following laptop for a couple of years it fine for me
I am upgrading my broadband soon to adsl2 with new router and new pci n cards
I also want to update the wireless g in the laptop Dell Inspiron 1501
This says I have a express card slot
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3359&review=Dell+Inspiron+1501

Right side view of 1501: ExpressCard slot, 3-in-1 card reader, microphone jack, headphone jack, 2 USB 2.0 ports (view large image)
Either usb like this http://www.edimax.co.uk/en/produce_detail.php?pd_id=280&pl1_id=1&pl2_id=44
Or express card http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-N1-Wireless-Express-Card/dp/B000KH2M7C/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258733761&sr=1-2
Do express cards run flush or as near as damn it in the slot?
There isnt much difference in price between usb and express card, the main difference seems to be how it is fitted and also express card is up to 300Mbps where as the usb is up to 150Mbps
Thanks

What gain are you hoping to achieve over the G rated in your laptop??
I use my G Rated Inspiron on my 20 Meg virgin connection with no problems at all, downloads at 2.2megs/sec (which is maximum).
It's going to be some time yet before N becomes significantly useful over G,

Better speeds. longer range (garden) and hopefully something that wont stick out too much so I dont have to unplug it all time, its mainly for home use not on go
also as I am getting anew n router using old g has some effect as I got told by manufacturers
From manufacturer
"If you run 11n and 11g at the same time, the performance will be a little down, but it still be better than 11g."0 -
It probably won't matter which one you choose - they both stick out a fair bit judging by the pictures. You might be able to replace the adapter you already have, but this would necessitate opening up the chassis.
If I were you I'd get a USB adapter with either an extension cable or a separate antenna array. That way there's less chance of damaging anything should it be dropped, mishandled or trodden on.0 -
Oh if that's the case and they stick out may as well get usb at least I can use it for pc too if needed up to 150mb is still quicker than g but main thing is I get a few dead spotw in my house so hopefully with a router with wireless n and has 3 aerials I get a better connection
Thanks all0 -
Note: you can get 300Mbps USB adapters too. Some of them are dual-band!0

Yes I saw that they do 3000mbs ones but dont think they do low profile ones, well none so far I could find0

Low profile? What are you talking about?0

Can you get a homeplug that has two outputs
I know one plugs into router via rj45 to main plug and another at pc in house. I was like to connect wii and a pc in living room as pc wont work at all in wireless tried 2 pci adaptors but works if I move in in centre of living room, wii next door to it works fine but very slow0 -
That it doesn't stick out much-TangleFoot- wrote: »Low profile? What are you talking about?0

No chance of that - even the smaller ones stand out like a sore thumb. Better to have it on the end of a cable so you can get a better signal.0
