Do OAP's pay council tax?

Hi, do oap's pay council tax? My mum is retired, claims her old age pension and a small amount of pension credit which will be reviewed in 2012.

She claims nothing else and has no savings.

Should she be paying?

As she gets Pension Credit she should not be paying any Council Tax. Other Pensioners with higher incomes do pay Council Tax.
  • I picked up a form for her when she retired at 60 this year. I spent ages filling it in for her....and she never handed it in!! Just wondering if it is worth me getting another form and filling it in again and this time I'LL hand it in.

    thanks.

She owns her own home if that makes a difference.

Owning her own home will not make any difference.

The op has not stated what element of Pension Credit her mum gets, if she was in recepit of Guaranteed Credit then yes she will get full benefit, if she get Savings credit only then she will have to pay something as this is not a passported element for full entitlement

I assumed it was Guaranteed Credit as the OP says her Mother has no savings.
  • My mum gets Pension Credit but has no savings, so I think it is Guaranteed Credit. She has applied for, and received, council tax benefit, but she still has to pay some CT. Is this wrong then? Or is it correct because we live in an area of high CT? She is in a band C property and gets the single person's reduction before the CTB is applied.

If it is Guaranteed Credit she should not have to pay any CT.
