Staff Alone until 9pm

  • I think it's bit unfair comparing France to England..
    Of course I’m no expert.
  • Imagine if all the lone workers in this country were banned from being lone workers after 9 pm. i wonder what the economic impact of this would be.
When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.
  • Well I will be working nightshift tonight, all by myself, isnt that a disgrace, oh wait no it isnt because I wanna get on with my job!

I think you are missing the point; the lone working needs to be risk assessed and measures put in place to monitor, communicate and react if something goes wrong. The OP's compnay are saying they can't be bothered to do this at all, until something happens.
  • Wow, i wasn't expecting some of those responses!!
I don't really want to say the name of the place i work but it is a smallish store (we take about 12k a week). The thing is, our store has never opened late before, not even during Christmas, as we are not the sort of store you would buy christmas presents from. Unfortunately, they have decided this year we have to.

Usually i am on my own for the first hour and then for the last half hour which is fine. My problem is working alone until 9pm. By the time we get cashed up at night it will be 9.20 or so before we leave the shop. All the other shops around us are closed down by the time we leave. I did suggest closing an hour earlier so there would be other people still around but that has been refused too.

Also, the only other person who can close the shop is not yet 20, so i don't like the idea of her being alone until that time.

As for the area, it is not overly rough but has been known for tensions. I suppose i am just annoyed that the requests have been turned down flat (no exceptions, i was told) and not even discussed. I will talk to my Area Manager again and see if there is anything that can be done.
    Thanks for all the replies!

Depends on what you do, where you work and whether your employer has done risk-assessment regarding lone-employees, I think.

I have no idea about that! It's something i will ask though.
Also, i did go round the other stores near us and they have all said that they have at least 2 members of staff on during late nights. I just feel that my company is not putting the employees first. Shouldn't be surprised really!
  • Has the OP considered getting another job since not happy with the one held?

If they have never done it before; then ask to be involved in the risk assessment; and check out the guidelines for lone working from the HSE
