can't get internet, all seems OK though

My son's dell laptop has decided not to load IE (8). He has good access to a local router and signal strength is great. I've done the obvious connection checks and all seems fine; however it can't access the internet at all. Nothing has been in or uninstalled recently, and it worked fine when doing his homework one day and then no access the next.

Has anyone got any ideas?? I do not have any error messages, just the usual 'not able to display page'.
Very frustrating as he can't access homework online.

thanks

    couple of things to try,

1 use a wired connection if you have the cable to check if it is actually a wireless problem

2 can he access any other ocmputers on the network and can they access his laptop or at least see it

3 can you access the router 'homepage' (usually accessed in web browser and displays the routes stats)

4 have you tried another browser - firefox, chrome, opera

5 disable firewall (only to check if the firewall has got a problem DO NOT leave it off - if it is a firewall problem you can get a free one to replace it)

sorry forgot to say the reason for checking these is although you might not have installed anything yourselves windows has a habit of installing its own updates without asking which can sometimes kill things so am just trying to rule out auto driver updates or as stated auto firewall updates
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

It's worth installing Firefox, even as a test. It will tell you if the problem is with IE or if it is with windows.

Your post is a bit vague and does not really contain enough information.

Is this your router that he is connecting to? What connection checks have you done? Can you ping the router? What make/model is the router?

What happens if http://209.85.129.99/ is entered into the browsers address bar?

I did that once and nearly burst a blood vessel as I had urgent work to do on one of my agencies' websites. :o:o

  • go to run comment and try to ping the address and see what it responds.
  • Power cycle the router.
  • Filter problems maybe>
