Don't think you will be covered as it isn't down to a malfunction/freezer breakdown. Check the policy.

Might be covered. Some policy "freezer content" sections extend to include accidental loss of power.

Take a look at page 34 on this More Than home contents policy document
    http://www.morethan.co.uk/process/documents/home_policy_wording.pdf

    Not excluded.
Only exclusion relates to power cuts caused by deliberate act of power company - i.e. you didn't pay the bill and they cut you off.

Not all insurers may be as generous as More Than but worth checking.

Oh, a good tip, as you pull the rotting food from the freezer is lay it all out on the driveway or in the garden and photograph it. Also make a list of the contents. You then have evidence of your loss and are free to dispose of the food - before it starts to smell.

Hi we have had a claim for freezer contents. I would have thought if you had accidental damage on your policy you should be covered.
All I did was telephone the insurers up and explained that the little un had been in the freezer but didnt close the door properly so everything had defrosted.
They told me to write a list of everything i had lost (inluding weights/price etc) and I got a full refund. I asked them what I should do with the food and they said just dispose of it, obviously I wanted rid because I didnt want a smelly house.
As far as I remember I didnt have any excess to pay neither.

    Deffinately contact your insurers.

Certainly check the 3 things of do you have to pay an excess (if so how much)? How much is the freezer contents limited to? How much is the contents of your freezer worth?

I know a friend who put a claim in after their freezer broke down and didnt check these things so had £200 of stuff, but the policy limit was £100 and they had to pay a £75 excess so basically they only got a cheque for £25 and their premium the next year went up by nearly £100

We had to photograph everything when we claimed - it wasn't pretty as the freezer was full of meat and it had gone off in a power cut when we were on hols and was sitting for a week - disgusting but we did get £300.

My freezer went wrong this week, cooking everything.

I thought about a claim, but I had to pay £50 excess. I also had to list everything and provide receipts (past) if I still had them.
My No claims discount would also be affected... I thought it was not worth it, but if you have just bought half a cow, then........

i have had 3 claims for my frezzer in last few years (each time because the kids didnt shut the door right)

each time its been paid without delay based on an estimate by me of the contents costs less my excess = about £100 cheque from the ins. company each time......my premium is uneffected each year i renew.

Presumably at the wall socket? Put a bit of electricians tape over the switch to prevent accidents. Particularly if it's part of a double socket - and the other side is used for something that's regularly switched at the wall?
