on Ebay UK you are not allowed to accept western union as part of their ongoing fraud protection.

partly true, but mainly they don't allow is as they make no money from it

paypal is equally as open to fraud, but ebay gets their cut anyway, so don't really care
    money saving my @rse.
I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

I would be very wary a my friends son has just sold a mobile phone that was to someone in africa, and they have been contacted by the police who said the fbi are investigating the person who bought it and all the accounts are frozen and they want statements etc also my friends lad has had his account hacked into, what does ebay actually do about these people it has made me wary of selling on ebay

Ebay and paypal are just as safe regarding account fraud as any other financial or other institution on the internet. The only way someone can get into your account is for you to let them in by having less than secure procedures when browsing, or by responding to phishing mails. As long as you know how to keep yourself safe and never stay logged in, never use easy to guess passwords and never respond to dodgy emails you will be fine.

As for scams..try putting the words Nigeria and scam into Google and see what happens. Again these 419 scams are not limited to ebay, they are rife even in the small ads and yes people still fall for them. On the 'anything else money saving' forum there is a current thread about someone who has fallen for one of these and is £1200 out of pocket.

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7625879587&ssPageName=ADME:L:EOISSA:UK:11

a private bidder has won my auction and I received an email from him asking me to send the item to Nigeria.

    Hello Seller
I am happy to be the winner of your item, I will like if you can send the
item to my son in west africa, Lagos, 23401, Nigeria. , please get back to
me as soon as possible because am sending it to him as a birthday gift and
I want it to be a surprise to him. All shipping expenses will be borne by
me, send me the total shipping cost to that location so I proceed with the
payment immediately. I will be paying via paypal, shipping options: UPS or
ROYAL MAIL SERVICE. get back to me ASAP........ Thanks

Could anyone tell me if this sounds dodgy.

    cheers

Never ship to Nigeria - ever, no exceptions.

They'll either be using a compromised Paypal account, or a stolen credit card funding the Paypal account.
Not everything that's cheap is a bargain
  • thanks guys... i will File non-paying bidder to reclaim my fees. :)
