Does this mean my clutch is going??

Hi, I'm useless at car mechanics so here goes:
When pulling away, my car is not reacting as fast and not picking up much speed BUT the rev's are getting as high as they normally would if I was at the correct speed! Is it anything to do with my clutch or is it something else?? Thanks

    It does sound like the clutch is slipping. Does it happen in all gears?

    Good way to tell is:
    In a clear road or somewhere quiet, pull the hand barake on.
    Put the car in first gear.
    Without touching the accelerator, lift the clutch all the way up. If the car stalls straight away then the clutch is fine, If the engine continues to rev fine, then the clutch is slipping.
  • Sounds like you clutch is slipping - this is usually most noticable when you are driving up a hill - the revs go up but the car doesn't accelerate, you can get it refurbished, get a second hand one or (if under warranty) take it to the dealer (although I doubt it would be slipping if it was new enough to be under warranty).

    You can still drive but be careful. When the revs start to rise (with no acceleration) lift off the accelerator to let the revs drop again.

    Best getting it sorted out though to avoid any trouble!

    If you're not getting a load of wheelspin then it's most likely a problem with the clutch

    One test is to press down the clutch and accelerator at the same time, the revs will shoot up, then slowly bring the clutch back in while keeping your right foot down, if the revs don't come down significantly and quickly then that indicates a problem with the clutch

    Surely " wheelspin " is caused by bad driving, nothing related to a clutch.:rolleyes:

  • Ignore post 4, post 2 is the best advice.
    Hopefully it's just a worn clutch and not oil contamination from the front of the gearbox or rear of the engine.
    You don't state which car, cable operation, hydraulic operation or whether the clutch is adjustable manually.
