    katty,

DLA is not taken into account when considering eligibility for income based benefits.

I think the answer really is that you can't do anything about it while you have your present income. Have you had this checked by CAB or Welfare Benefits Advisor though? If you have a low income you should be able to get some help with Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Benefit. With Council Tax you might be entitled to some discount depending on your situation anyway.

katty, you haven't necessarily upset anyone, I posted in anticipation of people maybe posting illegal solutions. :)

Is there any chance you could get your low rate DLA upgraded to middle rate care? this might give you severe disability premium (if you live alone) and then you may be entitled to means tested benefits.
    see
In order to obtain the middle rate (currently £37.65 per week) you need to show that you require help or supervision either during the day or during the night

Middle rate DLA is £41.65 weekly that link is about three years out of date rate wise ted?

How much is your rent out of interest weekly?

Could you defer your pension? Or take it as a lump sum?

If the worst comes ot the worst you could drop the DLA, if the cost of the rent and the CTB is higher.

    MMMmmmm....tough one.

DLA is paid for the extra costs of a disability, it's not taken into account for income based benefits so "dropping it" isn't an option.
