Lampshades don't fit?

Hi all. I have just moved into a new home and, unless I am complete dunce, the lampshades do not fit to the fittings (the light shades on the ceiling, to be exact!)
I have found the exact light fittings that we have:
http://www.litebulbs.co.uk/product/22305/litebulbs-low-energy-4-pin-pendant.aspx
They use those huge eco bulbs. When I went to screw in the lampshade I found that the metal ring on it was about 1cm too small, and it wouldn't screw on!
The actual light fitting also has this strange metal hoop with 4 pins on it, I don't know what they are for but I can take that off.
Do I need to get special lampshades? Should I just buy some pliers and cut the metal on the lampshade? Or am I doing something completely stupid and will it actually fit?
Any help appreciated! :money:

I think unfortunately you need the larger sized light fitting there are two sizes of fitting hole. You could try making the hole bigger if you like, If you wanna get rid of the pendants it not an expensive its easy enough job for a competent DIYer of course if in any doubt contact an electrician0

Thanks so much for your help, I was beginning to worry. I have been looking online for these wider fittings but nowhere seems to sell them, do you know if they have a specific name? I went into a few shops earlier today as well and couldn't find anything
