Int Explorer - missing files & folders

When in Int Explorer files keep going missing, found them in a folder and they are marked dbxfiles but unable to open them. Is a virus causing this or any ideas would be gratefully received as I know nothing about computers. Many thanks

dbx files are your outlook express mail files and can only be opened with outlook express (natch) and 3rd party software such as dbxtract which is is a free tool that extracts all mail and news messages from Outlook Express DBX files

What would make files turn into these dbxfiles, it has happened a couple of times. Both times after my daughter was over and used internet for a short time. Dont know if this is coincidence or not. Have had technician take off all spyware etc, installed XP & thought this would solve problem but it has happened again. Just turn on computer to find files not there, found them in a folder all marked dbx but unable to open any of them.

  • You say that files are missing - what are the names of the missing files?

What is the name of the folder that the .dbx files are found in?

Is your anti-virus software running correctly and updated regularly?

    Ditto anti-spyware stuff??

Is your daughter using any web-based email sites at all?? Pretty much grasping at straws, but wondering if that may cause the problem somehow ???

Thanks for your reply - not being a techie I will have to make enquiries before I can reply. I have asked so many 'professionals' and also paid out for technical help, & am still in the same position. Will ask husband & try to give a more detailed reply.
