car insurance charged £20 admin to change address - is this fair?

Options
We've moved house and RAC Car insurance charged us £20 to change the address on the policy - this was nothing to do with the premiums which dropped by about £8 for the year based on the new address/area. Is this fair/legal? £20 charge just to type a new address into a computer over the phone:mad:

  • Happens all the time - a simply change costs money.

    Sorry :(

of course you could object to the charge pointing out you will not continue with them next year if they insist upon the charge - you never know.
  • Also can apply to changing cars even if its same model and cc
  • Check their terms and conditions - what does it say there? Whilst its extortionate, look at it the way easyjet and Ryanair do business. How many customers change their address or their car during the year, its an additional request / burden on the company which they have to man up for - desk space, IT equipment, salary etc... Alternatively, they could add a couple of £ to everyone's premium but thats not fair on me as I'm not moving house?

as Scullster said, you need to check t and cs before taking out policy,a policy can be cheaper because of all these "small extra costs"

  • A lot of them charge a % up to the maximum allowed or agreed. My son's insurance was huge and when he changed his car before renewal date I think it cost the max £50 admin fee. His insurance was around £2000
