Carpetright vs others

Dear All,
I need you help in understanding which one should I go for. I searched threads for Carpet right and after checking every thing found my confidence a bit shaky. :o I have to re-carpet the whole upstairs with Stairs and landing and the cost which Carpet right have given me is rougly £960 for area of 60 Sq meters. The carpet which I am choosing is not on the higher end side but more towards the medium range. Moreover the Underlay require changing as well for which I have chosen TradePriceddotcodotuk for choosing the underlay.
Now I want a vet from all the experienced people on this forum to help me out. This is my first time for this so I really want all the help I can and decide the best (thanks to Martin:money:).
Currently I am looking for £12.8/SqM of the carpet + underlay which will cost @£7.99/sqmeter so it will cost ~£1250  . I hope there might be people who can help me with my search so that I can put the same or better stuff but on less price if possible. :D

At the absolute least, bargain/negotiate with them. I bargained at Laura Ashley yesterday and got £11 off. Not the same, but it just illustrates anything is negotiable. If the salesman can't 'deal' find the next person up. Personally. I cannot abide shops that permanently knock 70% off their fictitious prices.

Totally agree. We always use a small, local shop because I think Carpetright just make out their reductions from fictitious prices are a bargain. Ask around neighbours and friends or just look round the area for a small, independent.

Small and independent is usually the best however my local carpet right seems to be struggling. tell them you are happy to pay the price per sqm but only if they give you free underlay, and decent stuff at that.

There's no need to pay £7.99 per sq.m. for underlay. You can get Cloud 9 Cirrus, 9mm underlay, which is more than adequate for domestic situations for £2.28 + VAT per sq.m. from here
plus there are many other on line suppliers near that price. You can buy buy the full roll (15.07sq.m.) with the amount that you need. You can then, if you want, spend a bit more on your carpet or keep your costs down altogether.

Agree with going to a small independent, we made a massive saving on an excellent branded carpet by researching best internet price then asking local shop to price match. They didn't normally stock that one but dealt with a supplier who could get it and ordered it in for us. We had a whole house to carpet following a renovation so they were keep to get the business, but even with all of upstairs and h/s/l you are in a good position to negotiate.

Whilst I usually agree that small independents are a better bet this isn't universally true. We've had really terrible service from our (only) local independent carpet shop. We got our carpets from Carpetright and it all went very smoothly. We'll be using them again next time. I wouldn't say never use them, but I would say you need to be aware:

    1. That the discounts are not real discounts. Ignore them and just look at the actual price you're paying (and as others have said see if you can get any more knocked off).
    2. They do overcharge for underlay, gripper rods etc (although we found the carpet itself was cheaper than a local independent, so we ended up paying almost exactly the same amount overall). As you know, you can do underlay cheaper by buying it separately online.

Carpetright were a nightmare for us. We had our whole house done & in the end they agreed to replace 2 of the carpets, as the previous ones had all bobbled & worn terribly within a week.

Our living room carpet had shrunk within a month & didn't fit properly, but they just did not seem to care.

We spent a fortune with them!

    Never again!

I'm another fan of Carpetright. Our local 'independent' shops are mega expensive
( would put it down to the area)

could not put it better than lfc321

Remember the carpet fitters are independent, they could have just finished
laying carpet for a 'much' more expensive store.
  • Many thanks for your informative post. I was also looking around online but didn't get the chance to get the underlay so cheap wow. Its going to definately give me more ease towards my finances. I am definately going to have a go to the local carpet shops and will ask for discounts if they can give me some. I haven't receive any feedback about Allied Carpets. Is there any one have first hand experience from them????

  • I Was just about to post a similar question so am glad this has been posted. We are going to try and compare prices when we find the type of carpet we want and compare Carpetright to our local independant retailers.
We want something that is hardwearing what type of carpet is best too look for and anything to avoid?
