Valuation and Homebuyers Survey being done separately? Weird?

Has anyone ever heard of this, as it's certainly a new one on me?
Buyer's surveyor turned up to inspect our house on Monday and spent 35 minutes here. I had assumed this was the Homebuyers survey our buyers had asked for, but it turned out to be just the valuation (never heard of a valuation taking 35 minutes before - they're usually all over in 10 mins!) I got a call this morning booking a second survey - same firm but different surveyor - next week, which they said was the Homebuyers and this would take 2 hours.
I asked why the first surveyor had not done the Homebuyers while he was here doing the valuation and apparently he did not have time.
In that case, why send the first surveyor at all; why not just book the one appointment and get it all done in one hit next week? This would have meant us not needing to take two days off work instead of just one, and I won't even start on the additional stress, delay and confusion in having two different people do what could and should have been one job.
Has this ever happened to anyone else? Seems like a complete nonsense to me.

Part of the Furniture 10,000 Posts Name Dropper Combo Breaker
One is for the bank/mortgage provider (valuation), and one is for the buyer (condition of house).
Usually done together to save time/money but they are seperately contracted, and are seperate activities.
If the surveyer was busy that day, that would explain why he's coming back.
  • if the valuation survey comes back with problems and thence no mortgage offer for that property, buyer need not do a homebuyers survey and therefore saving £400+ or whatever the fee is.
  • Chuteboxe - thank you - that's a really valid point and has made me think more positively in this very stressful time!

Or it vould be that whilst there is no retainer on the mortgage there were some issues in the valuation report that the Buyer requires a further investigation into?
