Recieved a letter today from Eon (my electricity supplier) saying they are going to increase the direct debits even though we are in credit.
In October 2008 we was quite a lot in credit so we telephoned them and asked for our money back, they returned a large amount of the money back but asked if we leave some in credit for the winter months which we agred to do. At this time they also reduced our monthly payments. Earlier on this year they reduced our payments again.
Even though we are still in credit they have now wrote wanting to put the direct debit payments up. We have telephoned them today and they have told us that the system has caluclated the useage but not the amount we are in credit. They are now going to re-process the calculations and re-adjust the direct debit payments.
People need to keep an eye on their accounts and the amount they are paying.
Always question Direct Debit adjustments

Hi mechtrev
You are absolutely right to check any changes to your account.
With Monthly Direct Debits the aim is to achieve a zero balance by the time of the annual review in the spring.
To help achieve this, payment arrangements are reviewed after each quarterly bill and adjustments made accordingly. This seems to be what has happened to you with the reduction in your payments earlier this year.
Sometimes circumstances change and the reduced Direct Debit may not have been covering your ongoing usage. Hence, the need to increase.
Has your account always been billed to accurate meter readings or have estimates been used?
Have you seen any significant changes to your usage over the past couple of years?
Either of the above could have caused an imbalance when calculating your monthly payments.
Even if there is credit on the account it may not be enough to cover projected usage until the spring review.
However, the credit should certainly have been included in the calculation when an increase was advised. I am sorry if this did not happen but it seems from your post this is now being re-calculated.
Our quest for zero balances by the spring is far from an exact science as circumstances are continually changing. This often results in payment arrangements being both increased and decreased. It seems you have seen both sides of the coin in the past few months.
As I said, you are absolutely right to question any changes to your account and we advise of Direct Debit changes to give customers the opportunity to do this.
Hopefully, your payments are more in line with your usage going forward but give me a shout if you need any further help.

Perhaps your £50 in gift vouchers might have bankrupt them"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
I doubt it. Last year they gave away €2,856,795,549.00 in dividends alone.
Perhaps your £50 in gift vouchers might have bankrupt them
is that number right? almost 3 billion in dividends? i know they are there to make money but seriously why is ofgem allowing them to do that when there are really poor people struggling to keep their homes warm and some dying because of the cold?0 -

If you haven't had the letter yet, perhaps go the the vent board and have a rant about Royal Mail."Now to trolling as a concept. .... I've just got off the phone with eon and have the same problem - why should we prop up their bank accounts for them - I'm in credit by £70 odd pounds, am using 25% LESS energy than last year, based on their figures!! and they want to increase my direct debit from £80.00 per month to £100.00 per month (gas and elec) I've even asked the question are they putting prices up by 20% and is this why the dd needs to go up - no! but my discount has changed!? (does this not equate to the same thing, just worded by a spin doctor, rather than a clerk).
I am also fed up with each company having 20+ different tariff names and pricing stuctures. More choice has not meant cheaper pricing in the long term. and it's all very well chopping and changing around every few months / year but it all takes time. and what are we using when we're looking?....0
