  • If when you bought a train ticket the ticket clerk said next train from platform 8. Would you get on the next train at platform 8 without checking the electronic board?
I can understand your frustration but I will always check something out if I can do so within a minute or so. Having said that I would probably push hard with the hotel as it seems they got days of the week wrong.

Can I just say I know exactly how the OP feels.

Last Thursday I used "parkatmyhouse" to rent a car park space in Camden for the day, which cost me £10.00. When I arrived I even checked with the house owner that I was parked in the right place.
I returned to my car to find a ticket - turns out where I had parked does not belong to the house owner and was council land. I have written to the council and also spoken to "parkatmyhouse" who have said that they will assist me if I can't get the ticket cancelled.
So in answer to the original question, I think carlw had every right to believe the receptionist and expect the hotel to take some liability for payment of the ticket.

Something similar happened to a friend of mine when I lived up North.

My house was an end terrace, and where all the other houses had a front yard or garden, we just had an open space. It used to be a shop, and they got rid of the fenced yard so they could display stuff outside.

My mate parked there when visiting, and the kind traffic warden slapped a ticket on the car.

He refused to pay, and after getting no where to the council, my nice (ish) landlady took it up. She basically told the council that if it was their land, then she wanted the whole area covered in tarmac, as the broken concrete was a health and safety risk. If they wouldn't do it (which they wouldn't - it was LL's land, not council!), then they had to cancel the ticket. They cancelled it...

OP, I would write a stern letter to the hotel (sent recorded delivery) stating that you want them to pay it as it was their receptionist that made the mistake, which has already been admitted.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

You have my sympathy.. however you should have checked. I am yet to come across a car park that doesn't charge on a saturday.. I think the receptionist got mixed up. Most but not all give free parking on a sunday.

I suspect you have no legally ground to stand on buts its not very good customer service. If I was the manager I would have paid up.
