Can't see a thread about this but having heard allsorts of possibilities, I was wondering if anyone actually new if its true or not. Basically is it cheaper or more cost effective to keep your central heating on permanently on a lower temperature or to have it on timed?

I have mine on all the time as my house would drop below 10c at night.
I just alter the thermostat to the temperature I want but saying that my heating is only set to 12c at he moment in the evenings.

There are loads of threads on this subject.

In essence it is always cheaper to have it timed - provided you are talking about having it set to the same temperature. e.g. Thermostat set at 20C, then timed is cheaper.

However if you were to ask is it cheaper to have it timed at 20C or on 24/7 at, say, 17C - then nobody can give you an answer as there are lots of unknown factors. - how long timed, insulation in property etc etc.

In general terms if you aren't going to need it - don't pay for the opportunity.

i.e. if your out of the house between 9am and 4pm why heat the house the entire time, set it to turn on an hour before you return -- siumilar story with appliances with a standby setting.
