Can I find out who owns a property?

Hi,

I've found a house I want to buy. I've contacted the agent and put an offer 5 days ago. The agent is being difficult and delaying contacting the owner, he told me the only way he can contact him (he lives in Spain and rents it out) is email as they don't have his phone number. I've rung today to be told there emails aren't working so I suggested I send an email on their behalf and miraculously they now have a number for him. There have been many other excuses why there is a delay. The estate agent has told me blatant lies which I have caught him out on.

My question is there a way I can find out who owns a house and contact them direct (he lives in Spain)? We both want to and are in a position to complete within 28 days (subject to price) but the agent is holding things up.

Thanks

Knock on the door and ask the people renting. Their AST MAY have contact details for the owner.

That's worth a try in the absence of anything better, but I think the contact details that any tenant has is most probably going to be either a letting agency or a relative /friend in this country, as legally the tenants are supposed to be supplied with a contact address in the UK.
  • Have a look on the internet, the house might be advertised by more than one agent, if so, go to another agent because you are clearly being told lies by this one. If the people in Spain want to sell their house (and I am sure they do) they will not be difficult to get hold of.

If you get a copy of the title register (for £4.00) it tells you who owns it and their address... although not sure about an international address.
  • The register may show an internatinal address (or even an email address) but only if this was registered fairly recently as previously the address for service had to be a UK address.
