Laying porclean tiles??

Need some advise just got some porclean tiles for my patio which had a few problems last year and to sort it laid some cement to sort the problem and i planned to finish it off with tiles so it looks the part.
Now that i have my tiles i could not decide if slate ones or the porclean but i was told the slate ones would need treated and they where not as tough as the porclean ones so i went for them.
Anyway i got the ones i wanted and at a good price as they where discontinued and saved heaps but what i need to know they guy tried to sell me other stuff like the bags of stuff you lay the tiles on and some stupid tools he said i needed,i said my father builds and does need this crap.
Just i suppose trying to get more money out of me and who knows maybe he gets extra pay for selling more anyway these bags he was trying to sell was £25 a bag and i needed 3 and a half bags so that alone would be expensive,i said my father was a builder and he would use cement etc,the guys trys to say that this stuff has some sort of stuff in it that bonds more with the proclean mosre and the cement will not do as good as job,i told my father and he said not to bother but it was upto me,but when i told him the price he said its not needed.
Was i right in not buying this stuff,has anyone is this line of work know better,im sure my father is right but just needed to know from others.
