I am looking at a friendly web site but the JPEG images are not being shown?? just a red cross in the corner of the frame. Is this a firewall prob. is there a way around it?

Could be
i) images are missing.
ii) slow connection so your machine is timing out when getting the images.Hug provider for depression thread :grouphug:

Try turning the firewall off temporarily and reloading the page.
THEN TURN IT BACK ON OR REBOOT0 -
Right-click on one of the image boxes (the ones with the red X) and select 'Show image' (or 'Display Image' or whatever the option is). if you still don't see the pic, chances are it has been removed.
It's not uncommon for the images on a website not to work, or to have been deleted at the 'other end' or whatever.0 -
Go to Internet Options in the Control Panel (or via Tools in IE), select the Advanced tab. Scroll down the Multimedia and check that Show Pictures is enabled.

1. Pics work on a mates PC.

And when you do the right-click/show image thing, what happens then?0

We have to do the right click thing all the time. At my nans house we used to run a Dell laptop and didn't have a problem with seeing images they came up no problem without having to right click.
The thing I have noticed is that the dial-up internet seemed to zip along quicker at my nans (which was supplied on a BT line) than at my house which has dial-up internet supplied on a NTL line. Its as though the voltage is stronger on a BT line than an NTL line. I feel that whether BT or NTL supplies your line plays a big role in whether you get images or not.
I suppose its also possible that if you live a long way from a BT exchange then the voltage could weaken by the time it gets to your house.0 -
voltage has nothing to do with it.stay lucky!

I had a similar problem and fixed it with this from Godders:-
Your problem may be less serious than Fran's was.
1st check to see if you have had your hosts file hijacked:
1. Navigate in explorer to C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc (if you are using XP) or c:\windows (if you are using windows 95/98)
2. Double click on the file 'hosts' and when you are asked what to use to open it choose notepad.
3. Look for an entry for symantec along the lines of:
127.0.0.1 https://www.symantec.com
(I put these the wrong way round originally - sorry)
if there is one there then delete the whole line. In fact, unless you have put anything in there yourself the only one that belongs there is
127.0.0.1 localhost
2nd Update your antivirus and it should find the virus responsible.
