Cound I have too many security systems?

Edit - excuse spelling mistake in heading - cant amend it!!

My husband (a worse technophobe than me) was left alone last night with the laptop - when I have logged on this morning - it is extrememly slow:mad: .

I've noticed that we now have various security sites on our system that have not been put there by me - he just laughed when I asked him!!

Is it possible to have too many security sites on at the same time - could this be my problem?

The ones we currently have are AVG (I have had that one for ages with no problems), Bullguard, ZoneAlarm, Ad Annihilator and BitTorrent (think this might be something to do with music he was looking at last night?

There is also something called Peer Manager - is this to do with music as well does anyone know?

Once I'm done here - need to find a safe place to hide the laptop while I go out!!

Yes, Ideally, ONLY have ONE Firewall working on the PC. You can have more than one Anti-Virus though.
As for the Music, is it still downloading maybe?

Using two or more Anti Virus checkers at the same time is not a good idea.

Theres lots of potential for the software to not be compatible together & also will slow the machine down as they are both scanning in the background for the same things.

Check he's not downloading/uploading using Bittorrent. That will slow your Internet connection down a lot.

Bittorrent programs sometimes run in the background of your system Uploading the files you download. Peer Manager I think is a defence program that is used to block IP addresses to try and safegaurd against people seeing you are illegaly downloading stuff like music.

too many !!!!!! sites accessed and too much downloading stuff from bittorrents will slow the machine down, especially if he is sharing.

is the machine only slow on non internet based programs? as others have said, is it still downloading?

    time to run avg.

Don't delete Zone Alarm if it is your only firewall, that is asking for trouble!

    Hi
I would stay with AVG and Zonealarm but also make sure you do not have any spyware on your system as this will not only slow it down considerably but also risk private data.

Try installing the following free programmes:
    Spybot
    Adaware
    Spywareblaster
    Winpatrol

Update them and then scan your hard disk with the first two.Any spyware detected should be deleted immediately!
The last two programmes function more as preventative measure against spyware.
Also try to use Mozilla Firefox or Opera web browsers as Internet Explorer is full of holes and should be only used if the aforementioned web browsers have incompatibility problems with websites.

Also try installing CCleaner as this will delete any unwanted files from your system too. You can also use it to clean any old settings and to prevent programmes from starting up with Windows too!
