Why don't you hire a decent mitre saw, about £26 a day from HSS

Hi, not a pro, but DIY enthusiast....

I'd go with the electric mitre saw every time... as other posters say, you can shave a thou off if required, and get a much sharper cleaner cut. With all that hand sawing in the type of saw you mention (a) you'll be knackered and (b) the skirt can move the more you 'fight' with it, leaving a less than perfect cut.

Buy a £40 electric job, then flog it on ebay for £30 afterwards if you'll never use it again.

PS... golden rule... angled mitre for OUTSIDE corners, but a SCRIBED joint for inside corners... hard to explain but this link shows you how with step by step pix.

    Good luck ;)

  • As said.

Don't waste money on a cheap hand mitre saw.

    Remember the rules.

    Mitre external angles/corners.
    Scrribe internal angles/corners.

thanks for all the replies, just been out lunchtime, only meant to get paint and a power mitre saw ended up buying christmas lights!!! B&Q are doing a power tool discount. Just got to find some 6inch skirting board now to replace the skirting board that i'm going to take out.

Used a £24 circular saw from B&Q on my 9" skirting. The 45 degree angle function took a bit of getting used to but the results were good

It's an old play on their terms...you buy something and can return it for a full refund without a good reason. It needs to be as bought though, which would be a problem in this case I reckon :p

A mate of mine used to do this and explained it when I was with him returning something one day...the look on the guys face was amazing at Argos...he knew exactly what was going on. I bet they all do so you'd need balls of steel to do this. :rotfl:

Just as an aside, when you buy a cheap mitre saw they usually come with ripping blades. To avoid large amounts of filling and sanding it might be worth getting a fine cut blade. Toolstation do quite reasonable pice blade (£10ish) which will be fine for occasional use.
