Maestro alternative for travel

I have a Natwest current account with Maestro Debit card. Recently I've had trouble with my card not being accepted abroad and on some websites. Is there a way to get another more widely accepted card, without having to get a credit card type account, e.g. Mastercard? Also, can anyone recommend a particular card/account which would be widely accepted abroad?

Natwest will be changing your Maestro for a Visa debit card sometime in the near future, so you may not have to worry.0 -

Call them up and tell them your card is damaged, you'll get a visa debit replacement
It is expensive to use your visa debit / or maestro debit from natwest abroad there are cheaper alternatives.
Caxtonfx prepaid card is one. https://www.caxtonfxcards.com0 -
I never have any problems using my Maestro Card abroad or online, are you sure the problems are Maestro related?.0

I think first I'll probably request a Visa Debit card replacement as a minimum-effort option!I never have any problems using my Maestro Card abroad or online, are you sure the problems are Maestro related?.
Well I just tried using my Maestro on ryanair, but they don't accept the card. I had to use my sister's Visa Debit card instead. Also, when I was in Sweden a while back, I use my Maestro to withdraw cash from an ATM but came across problems when trying to use it to pay directly.
Thanks for the help guys!0 -

Everytime you use your Natwest debitcard abroad to pay for something, you pay and extra £1.25 a time + fees of 2.75%, u know that right?0 -

Yeah I did know there were charges, thanks. I guess I'm just too lazy to create and use a separate account just for travel expeneses.
I'm assuming that using the Visa Debit card will have the same charges as the Maestro card... anyone know for sure if this will be the case? I didn't think to ask when I requested a replacement!0 -

If you travel abroad on a regular basis, then you may consider opening a Nationwide Flexaccount, no charges for using their Visa Card in Europe, and excellent exchange rates.0 -
