Help URGENT passport advice please

We go to Lanzarote in 2 weeks and 6 days, took the kids passport forms in yesterday, to renew them on the 2week check an send thingy, big problem they won't accept the photo's the background is to white not grey/cream. (Had the pics done in Sainsburys passport photo booth)
So I am getting new pics done today, got to get them counter signed so hopefully will get them in today last thing (just).
The post office said you need 3 weeks or they wont accept them for check n send, so what do I do, if I put them in and I dont get them back in time can I still do the 1 day passport thingy (costs £109 each though)?
How long does a passport take at the moment?
Why didnt I do the passports ages ago!

I suggest you find the web-page for the Passport Agency, look for a telephone number, and ask their advice. You might also contact your travel agent and find out what a date-change would cost: I suspect that changing the dates of your holiday would be cheaper than getting one-day passport appointments for several people.

I seem to recall that the 2 week check and send thing isn't guaranteed anyway?

Why on earth would you leave the renewal of passports until the last minute?

Rang passport office, I can get a passport in a week if I go to the office, abit cheaper than the one day one, but not much.

Polishbigspender, I have no idea, I am not very organised! I dont think I'm the first and doubt I will be last either! At least its sorted now, thanks for the replies x
