Size of new TV for room

Please can I have some help regarding a new tv for my room.

I was on the sony website and it helps you with the size of the tv to the size of your room.

http://www.sony.co.uk/hub/bravia-lcd-televisions/block/13/subblock/1

I was looking at the 32" full hd and it says the optimal viewing distance is 1.3m. I am assuming though this is for a hd program.

80% I will be watching non hd programs. Surely, the optimal distance is not 1.3m? But what would be the optimal distance for a 32" tv for non hd programs?

Thanks

The size of your TV in your living room should be in direct proportion to the amount of Burberry clothing you wear.

For Standard Definition programmes, the recommended viewing distance for a 32" television is 8 feet. At 720 it's 6 feet and at 1080 it's 4 feet.

    This may assist you.

Remember that a good television will upscale the SD picture to 720 or 1080. Now that the BBC, for example, is making programmes in HD, the upscaled SD picture is pretty good.

Remember also that both Freeview and FreeSat will be delivering ever more HD content in the coming years.

It's best to work out either how you want to arrange the furniture in your room and then buy a television of the correct size for the 1080 viewing distance, or, if physical size (or price) is a restraint, how to rearrange the furniture so that you can sit at the correct 1080 viewing distance from the television that you can accommodate.

Sony (and the chart to which I have given you a link, above) recommends 2.1 metres (about 7 feet) as the optimum viewing distance for a 52" television at 1080. We've found that to be exactly right and SD television, properly upscaled, looks pretty decent on it, too.

If you buy a television that's too small, you'll either have to live in denial of the fact or then replace it with something larger; so it's an expensive mistake to make. :(

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

  • When you say recommended viewing distance is 8 feet, does that mean a foot either way wouldn't make much difference?

(actually I will be a little under 7 feet)

Ive not actually measured the distance, but I must be approx 2.5 to 3m away from my 46" screen and it looks absolutely fine

HOWEVER, you must take into consideration that mine is also set up a lot better than most (I use mains filters etc), and that the 46W5500 has an excellent 'scaler' in it so SD content looks very good on it

A tv with a bad scaler in would look awful close up

Personally I think a 22" tv is PLENTY big enough

I had a 13ft square room and had a 50'' in it with no problems. We've since moved and have a bigger room but I used to sit pretty close to it and it was fine.

If you're watching it in a wendy house then it may be :p

Try and go for the largest you can afford and actually fit into a room. At 8ft anything less than a 42 will start to look small very quickly. I went from a 42 at 9/10ft and upgraded to a 50. Great choice but I'm sure a 60 woulc also fit :D

If you are mainly watching SD programs the I would recommend a plasma like a panasonic. There is a 46inch G10 on offer at the moment for £750 which is a ridiculous bargain!

Out of interest how large is your room, how far will you sit from the tv and what is your maximum budget?

I have the Sony 32" TV, I calculated the distance required and rearranged my bedroom to fit.

I now have no room either side of my bed but I get a great view of the tv.
