  • Hi bobb1985, similar thing has happened to us.We own this property but it was let through a management agent whilst we were overseas. We contacted EDF who have been supplying this property for the last 4 years when we moved back in on 7th Sep to ask them to continue to supply.A few days later we had a letter from Spark energy addressed to the occuppier saying they were taking over the supply of both gas and electricity and to contact them with our details.I immediately called EDF who assured me this would not happen. Then a few weeks ago I had a final bill from EDF for electricity I rang and asked what was going on (seems we transferred to spark anyway)
I then asked them to tranfer us back now that has been done.Does anyone know how I stand with the supply from spark as tthey do not have our details.I do not mind paying my bills but am really annoyed at spark and would like to teach them a lesson.Anyone know?

When you contacted EDF, they should have stopped the switch or reverted the switch as an Erroneous Transfer
...The contacted supplier should send the customer a letter within 5 working days of being informed of the situation. This should explain how the erroneous transfer process works.

A second letter should be sent within 20 working days of the supplier being informed of the situation This should explain why the erroneous transfer took place and also confirm that the supply will be returned to the original supplier within 20 days of the problem being reported.

Suppliers have signed up to a voluntary compensation scheme that requires them to pay £20 compensation to domestic consumers when the confirmation letter has not been recieved within the 20 day period.

If EDF didn't send that letter then you should get £20 off them.
Will a consumer receive a bill from the new supplier if the supply is returned via the Erroneous Transfer process?

No. The new supplier should not issue you with a bill if the Erroneous Transfer process is followed, as the supply will be transferred back to the original supplier who will continue to be responsible for billing you.

This means that the original supplier will be owed money for the entire period during which the transfer error occured. Therefore, it is advisable to keep money ‘to one side’ so you can afford to pay any bill that arrive once the erroneous transfer process has been completed.

Yes. The above only applies to an Erroneous Transfer.

Otherwise you'll get nothing from EDF and will owe Spark for the energy you used from them. They know where you live, and it wouldn't require a genius to find out your name - they probably know that already as they have transferred your supply to them.
