Hi I live in north London and need to get my stereo amp fixed as it only plays records on one speaker, I'm sure it's very simple and just a matter of adjusting the wiring, does anyone have any idea where I could take it without being ripped off? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most electrical service places will charge you £50 just to tell you it's knackered.
What amp is it? Because it may be more cost effective to ebay a 'new' one.
Have you done the usual tests to make sure it's a dead channel on the amp and not something else. Swap the speakers round on the amp end and swap the inputs round from your record player at the amp end.
The working speaker should swap with the first test and not with the second.0 -
Thanks for your response! It's a marantz, I'm sure the problem is a bad wire connection because cd and radio and stuff play fine through both speakers and sometimes I can get it to work through both speakers for records if I move the dial around and sort of put it just between aux and cd, but as you can probably tell I'm to useless to open it up and work it out for myself! £50 that's terrible!:eek:0

Get a cheap multimeter, set it to ohms and poke around the inputs see if the wires are good on that input. Make sure it's unplugged !!!!!
If all else fails richer sounds are cheap to buy a new one or try freecycle people give away all sorts of stuff but you normally have to be quickNothing to see here, move along.0 -
I'll try!! Have to find out what a multi meter is first! Thanks!!:D0

mmust admit im part of the disposable generation, which kinda sucks. My Dad always gets stuff repaired and seems to have no trouble. I couldnt comment on the cost but if we all continue to throw things away like this it'll be more than £50 we're worrying about...

Why not sell it on ebay - most people nowadays don't care about the turntable inputs, in fact most amps don't have them any more. Then buy a new/secondhand one.
Alternatively buy an external turntable input that plugs into a line level input (if you have one free). Why pay more than you have to?0 -
Thanks!! I'll look around, I'm not sure how great I would be at doing it myself!:beer:0

what's the model number of your amp?Alternatively buy an external turntable input that plugs into a line level input (if you have one free).
Or you could buy one of the excellent Project II record players with a phono stage built in, depending on what deck you've got at the minute you may find that this gave your records a whole new lease of life.
It sounds like a dry connection on your input selector, I don't think you'll easily be able to fix it though.
I'd be tempted to sell it as a working amp as most people wouldn't ever find that this part was dodgy, I'm unscprupulous in that respect though0 -
try taking the lid off and spraying the selecter knob with some wd40 and click the knob backwards and forwards a bit it, could just be a dirty contact in the selecter knob. You want to get the wd40 inside the workings of the selecter don't spread it all over all the electricsNothing to see here, move along.0
