While I've been looking I've been asking the chap who deals with any problems we have computer-wise if he has any recommendations or makes to avoid. The only thing he has said is to avoid Acer because they tend to put a lot of software on which slows the computer down. I mentioned this to my DS who has an Acer desktop and he confirmed this. (But I'm sure there are many Acer fans who will say there's no problem :D ). Shame as most of the ones I've looked at in my price bracket seem to be Acer. I'll keep an eye on your thread to see what's recommended.

One can quite easily take the software away.. One good thing with Acer is you can buy the 3 year Acer Advantage warranty for a reasonable price (searching via the internet)

great replies guys, thanks! as of thismorning daughter 1 has decided she wants an ipod touch 32gb instead...! so just one laptop now for little one (only 8 but extremely computer minded!!) would you perhaps suggest she gets a cheaper assus one ect? as long as it is fast, can handle flash sites like club penguin and has a decent battery life (that samsung was 7hrs!) any suggestions? thanks!

I would go with a cheaper laptop but, as she is 8, make sure the build quality is sturdy enough to handle being knocked about a bit. I personally think Asus feel a bit too cheap and nasty, but that's my opinion. I should say that I actually work for a very large IT company as a hardware engineer so I repair PC and laptops all the time.

In my experience, the only ones I would avoid are the PC World / Currys own brand stuff like Packard Bell and Advent as they are usually poorly made and the support is bad (both telephone, online and in person).

Recomendation wise, you can't normally go wrong with the big names like HP, Compaq, Toshiba, Dell, Samsung, Sony etc. Acer are OK - most companies pre-install software, not just Acer, but usually it's easy enough to remove if you don't want to use it.

One slightly off the wall suggestion is to check out Aldi. They often do offers on PC's and laptops and theirs are made by a German company called Medion (who also make a lot of the PC World and Currys own brand stuff) but the quality is a bit better, and the price cheaper.

You won't be able to get laptops with XP on now unless you install it yourself so, spec wise, for Windows Vista or 7 you want a minimum of 2GB of RAM memory. Don't worry overly about the processor - as long as you aren't wanting to play "proper" PC games (like the ones on an XBox or PS3 rather than something like The Sims!) then whats around today will be fine.

Disk space is not something to worry about too much either - most laptops today will have 250GB in which is more than enough. That's space for around 2000 full CD's of music or 60,000 photo's (or hundreds of thousands of pieces of homework). You can always get an external plug in USB hard disc if you need more.

Work on the principal that in about 3 or 4 years, you will proably just buy another anyway, rather than upgrade the one you have.

The rule of thumb I give everyone who asks me is, think of how much you want to spend and stick to it. A suitable, brand name laptop for normal use shouldn't cost you anymore than £350, £400 tops.

Another website you might want to look at for bargains is www.morgancomputers.co.uk - they are a big like the Richer Sounds of the PC world. People like Toshiba, HP etc sell them their old stock when a new model comes out and often you can get really great deals, especially if you just want something fairly basic.
  • wow thanks begize, for taking the time to write such a helpful and detailed reply-i know its not just me you will help!!!

You can buy direct from medion on medionshop
We just purchased a medion pc from aldi and a similar one from dell was at least £300 more.
I dont know enough about pc's to compare so asked brother in law whom works in I.T. and he pointed us in the right direction.:T
  • I just had a look at MedionShop.co.uk and nothing seems to be coming up except:

    Choose your Medionshop

    MEDIONShop AT
    MEDIONShop BE/FR
    MEDIONShop BE/NL
    MEDIONShop CH/DE
    MEDIONShop CH/FR
    MEDIONShop FR
    MEDIONShop NL
    MEDIONShop UK

Even when I press MEDIONShop UK nothing appears except for a blank page. Is it just me?
