Hi, I'm interested in the link too. I'm really confused though, what is the difference between a netbook and a laptop please?

  • By the way, it says on Pixmania: to receive goods in Northern Ireland, the order must be placed through Pixmania United Kingdom.

So should be OK for NI deliveries.

This is something that I've asked recently. Basic answer was that a netbook wont have a drawer thingy to put your CD roms into. Sorry it's not a very technical answer but as I need to use programmes that I have on CD roms then it ruled out a netbook for me. The programmes contained jpegs that I would want to import to a document.

This is the answer I got when I asked if my CD roms would work on a netbook:
I'm afraid your CD ROM's will not work with that netbook, because netbooks do not have optical drives! You would need to buy an external USB DVD drive as well.

Netbooks are generally optimised to be smaller and less power hungry than a normal laptop - they're aimed at users who want to be very portable (i.e. use it on battery for a long time) or only do basic stuff like internet, email, Word etc.

They are smaller than a normal laptop and so don't have CDROM drives and will probably also lack as many USB ports and other connections. They will also have a smaller keyboard and screen and probably come with a less powerful (and potentially slower) processor than a laptop. Some don't have an actual hard disc and use similar technology to memory sticks to store their files.

Expanding things like memory or hard disk on a laptop can be difficult, on some netbooks it's impossible!

This should mean they are cheaper than a laptop, but, as is always the way with something in vogue or demand, the price goes up.

Personally, I would go for a cheap laptop anyday of the week - netbooks look nice but are too limiting if you want to do anything other the basics.

As for getting the best prices, check sites like e-buyer.com or whatever your local independant PC seller is and get a feeling for how much they are. Then check places like PC World and Currys - often PC World do offers on their website where you reserve on line but pay in store and get money off the normal price.

PC World et all WILL do you a deal - at the end of the day they are on commission and if you are prepared to walk away and play them against each other, you'll get a bargain.

Example - my Brother broke his laptop and needed one quickly (it's involved in his job). He went in PC World, saw one he liked, rang me at work, I googled it, found it £40 cheaper on Amazon (but a slightly lower spec) and PC World beat the price after he haggled with them.

One thing though - they will try and sell you all the extras - anti virus, MS Office, extended warranties etc. That's how they make their money, with the bits and pieces. Before you know it, your £300 bargain has cost you £400.

You can get free (or very very cheap) good quality anti virus programs online. You can probably get a copy of MS Office from wherever you work (our licence in the office covers the employees to have a legit copy at home as well). Chances are you will 60 day versions of both of them pre-installed on the laptop anyway, so you can worry about that later.

As for extended warranties, if it's going to fail, it will normally do so within the first 12 months, electronics these days are generally very reliable and most people's house insurance covers you against accidental damage if you drop it down the stairs or the kids spill a can of generic flavoured fizzy drink on them.

Basically, think what you want to spend, don't be blinded by science and you will get a deal.

Don't forget less obvious shops as well - places like John Lewis in the UK where they offer price matches and sometimes free extras like 5 year extended cover.

Thanks for such a comprehensive post Begize. I still haven't found what I want yet, I want to stick to XP if possible (discussed on another thread so wont go into it here).

Only thing that puts me off PC World is that their customer service seems to be on a par with Currys, Comet, etc., and there aren't too many people praising any of them.

:rotfl: Kids, doncha just love 'em! Good job Santa hadn't already arranged her pressie!

While I've been looking I've been asking the chap who deals with any problems we have computer-wise if he has any recommendations or makes to avoid. The only thing he has said is to avoid Acer because they tend to put a lot of software on which slows the computer down. I mentioned this to my DS who has an Acer desktop and he confirmed this. (But I'm sure there are many Acer fans who will say there's no problem :D ). Shame as most of the ones I've looked at in my price bracket seem to be Acer. I'll keep an eye on your thread to see what's recommended.
  • i know.......kids! the problem came about yesterday because i took them to currys to have a look at both and the guy told her the ipod is far better than laptop as it does all the same things in a smaller packet, then we discovered skype can be used on it aswell and she was sold, lol.
little laptop daughter however will never waiver so im confident enough to actually buy it and even order a cheap bag of ebay-they do lovely hello kitty ones for about £7ish from hong kong via ebay and they have delivered really quick to us before for other things.
its getting harder and more confusing every year.....at least i understood sylvanians and dolls and prams!!!!
