screen problem, everything smaller

after turning on this morning everything is alot smaller than usual, ive changed the resolution but it doesnt work, ive managed to change the text and icons to make them bigger but thats all thats changed, when i open a new window its still small
ive searched for the correct driver and windows say its working properly and up to date
ive got a feeling its to do with the windows updates i installed yesterday but find it strange how the problem only happened this morning and was fine yesterday
im on IE and vista
please help!

At the top right of each web page is a line a square and a cross (in Red), what happens when you click the middle one i.e the little square.

do you mean the compatability button?
if so nothing, the problems on start up too

Have seen this on laptops, the solution was to connect to a monitor boot up then switch off, disconnect from monitor and restart, this worked but have no idea why.

If you are not using a laptop then I will leave it to the more gifted gurus out there, good luck!

if you want to make text on a web page bigger, then pressing ctrl and scrolling the mouse wheel should do the job

No I mean the buttons on the top right of this picture.

oh haha sorry!
yeah that makes it fit the screen but its not just the web pages, its the start up icons, the desk top icons (both of which i have made bigger) but the side bar and cursor are the same, also the screen saver has black margins around it

What happens when you adjust the screen resolution in windows. Right click on the desk top, can't remember the vista menu as i've moved to Win7, one of the options will enable you to adjust it.
