Societe Generale tells clients how to prepare for 'global collapse'

You could buy Short (Inverse) ETF's

You could buy Puts, you could use a Bear Call Spread, or a Bear Put Spread, an In the Money Naked Call would be a good strategy to use if you were expecting a deep sell off in the market. (very risky though as you are 'naked'), or of course a Put Backspread would give you maximum protection whilst you would benefit from a sizeable portion of any downmove.

I could go on, but I am boring myself

P.S. The wikipedia article is very enlightening ;)

It is if you put the bracket on the end of the address when you click it!

At a base level though, how do any of these other strategies actually generate profit though? Aren't they just high level abstractions over mechanisms that short sell shares (as per the 'old wives tale' definition) at some point?

The other 'shorting' options you mentioned - where does the money come from if you make a profit out of them? Does somebody actually borrow some shares at some point to make money by the short selling process I mentioned earlier (the one you said was an old wives tale).

No sh*t sherlock, well unless you intend living forever of course.

I see nothing has changed on this forum, still full of Mad tinfoil Hatters wasting their lives worrying about things they have no influence on and wasting money building bomb shelters under their stairs.

Oh well, back to the pensions and MFW forums for me, places where people are taking advantage of the downturn to increase their net worth instead of running around like Chicken Little telling people the sky is going to fall or lying curled in a ball afraid of the future.

Why are you posting under yet another alias, Deluded Dad? People have got to know you as Harry Powell on here so please stop this nonsense. You're worse than Broderick's sockies.

    other 'shorting'

    It's not 'other' shorting.

It's the only way an ordinary investor/person can short the market.

The 'profit' comes from the 'loss' made by the person(s) who buy the Puts/Calls off you, or sell you the Puts/Calls.

How does one define "global economic collapse"? I mean, what would it look like to the ordinary person on the street?

Oh I don't worry about it, I find it an enjoyable experience logging into my various savings and pensions accounts and seeing them doing well. My United Utilities shares for instance have jumped up quite a way since I bought them a month ago.

He just can't resist bragging can he!

I don't suppose Societe Generale might sell investments that would protect from such a disaster?
