purina one - any good???

hi guys,

my billy has had a bad tummy pretty much since we got him and the vet was saying he might be allergic to chicken and chicken flavour things!!

when i got home i searched my cupboards for a non chicken food and came across a bag of salmon and rice purina one. the cats both love it but i was wondering if it is a 'good food' to give?

it said it was 16% salmon and 14% rice plus a load of other stuff!!

it would be very handy to be able to feed this regularly as it is in supermarkets.

- now what can i do with all the nice expensive chicken food i got a couple of weeks ago!!

I got given some when I got Daisy but she would'nt touch it,she preferes Pets@Home's 'Purely' range.(26% Samon/20% Rice & other)

As for the other food,is the a Cat Sancturary nearby? They'd be very grateful of it.

It's as good as any other premium complete diets on the market. If the cat likes it, is fit and healthy on it and it's convenient for you to buy then great! :D

I would normally say to switch it slowly over the course of 7-10 days to avoid any tummy upsets but if they current food is causing diarrhoea anyway then switch immediately :)

Looking at the prices purely works out cheaper too. i might get some to try when i next trek over to p@h but it is easier to go tesco lol

and i got billy from my local cats protection so will probably give the hilife to them. (though the feline fayre i bought in morrisons 2 days ago is going to get exchanged for the tuna flavour one)

ps chameleon - i am changing the food straight away as he has been on hills id chicken flavour for over a week as prescribed by the vets!!

Seems to me the best thing to do for all concerned is to get your Billy on any food that settles his digestion! You may consider asking the vet about a probiotic (beneficial bacteria) supplement to help them repopulate his gut. I think the Pets at Home Purely is great value for money if it suits, the small tins of wet food are all fish varieties and cheaper than their pouches.

If you want to try other foods without spending a fortune, you might e-mail some of the pet food companies for free samples - I found most very generous! Hypoallergenic dry foods include Wafcol, First Class, Arden Grange, Vitapurr and James Wellbeloved: all of these companies have the ingredients listed on the websites. If you are looking for fish-based you might try Fish4Cats or Orijen six fish variety, neither of which contain grains which some cats may be sensitive to.

    Thanks firefox.

forgot to say vet gave me a probiotic (pro kolin - 3rd tube of it!!), some panacur (he is wormed but apparently it also gets some bacterias) and some antibiotics.

i just wanted your opinions about the food side of things as i know this is an issue we all love!!
the vet didnt seem overly worried as billy is fine in himself and is showing no other signs of illness. i have to take him back again if he isnt better in a couple of weeks time.

The antibiotics will kill everything, even the good bacteria (necessary evil), did the vet explain to carry on the course of probiotics after the antibiotics are complete? To give the antibiotics at a different time of day to the probiotic, and the probiotic with or after food?

Both good foods but not exactly cheap ... Schesir is between £7 and £14 per kilo, Almo Nature £7 to £11 per kilo. I can buy a beautiful leg of lamb or rib of beef for that price!
