I am sorry in advance if this has been asked before, but it took me 5 minutes to load this page and God knows on this connection I'm going to be doing a search but to the question...
...do people who suffer from depression eligible for some sort of funding or grant? I'm currently in University and failed my first year to it and still is a large hindrance. Sigh.

Im not sure i know exactly what you mean?
Do you mean is there anyway to get finance to to cover the extra year? cos the answer is yes nearly everyone gets that regardless...
But if not im not sure what your getting at? to help you through uni? anything specific?0 -
Magicstrawberry - No, I'm not referring to anything in specific, sorry if my original post wasn't very clear,I understand the last sentence went on a bit of a tangent, it was meerly just me having a little rant, ha. What I'm asking is...
..am I entitled to any financial support due to my condition? As my money situation isn't the greatest and if I'm eligible, why not right? A friend of a friend says she receives help because of her depression and I just in seek of some clarification on whether I'm eligible or not. Sorry for the confusion Magicichigo.0 -
Do you have any care needs or mobility problems because of your condition? Do you need someone to cook meals, coax you out of bed? Perhaps you can't walk down to the corner shop by yourself due to fears/anxiety/something like that? Do you need constant emotional support? Do you ever get suicidal due to your condition?
If you fit this kind of criteria, you could apply for Disability Living Allowance. It's not an easy benefit to apply for, and your care needs generally need to add up to hours every day and night."There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0 -
You might be eligible for disabled students allowance, if you can think of anything that might be helpful to you equipment wise. You'd have an assessment where they'd be able to see what you might find beneficial.0

My son is 21 and doing an HND at college. He gets income support with a disability premium. He's just failed his capability assessment though and we're in the process of appealing it. He suffers from extreme anxiety and missed a year of college because of it. He lives at home.
We previously tried for DLA but didn't get it. He got this instead.0 -
Thats ok dont worry about it
Like Jazabelle says if you have care needs like what she describes then you could apply for Dla ... it allways helps support your claim if you have doctors or psychatrists support.
Disability Students Allowance will probably harder unless you have mobility issues too ... you maybe be able to get a note taker if you find it hard going to lectures but im not sure about this but you can ask worse case senario they no
Income support and the disability premium .... this is alot harder to get as most university students arnt entitled to it .... there is some few exceptions one way i think is if you are disabled again do ask
Hope your feeling ok

DLA can be for non-medical helpers too, i was offered a 'buddy' to help my anxiety in new situations, a person who would accompany me to my first few lessons, help me get orientated etc. do you think this would help you?0

You can't get income support as a disabled person now (after October 2008) and it's now ESA you apply for.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

Do you have a disability support office at uni?
I've had depression previously in my life. Now on my first year at uni and and there's a considerable amount of support. At least compared to when I was simply asked to leave school whilst in sixth form (pre-disability discrimination act) due to my depression.
I know the citizens advice bureau have helped me in the past with debt. They had legal aid funded advisors who helped agree managable payment plans with large organisations who I owed money too. Now have a healthy credit rating again and was able to get through the bad patch.
If you're no longer a student, ie not enrolled on a course this year. You can apply for ESA, DLA as mentioned earlier. Housing Benefit if you're renting and council tax benefit.
Also check out the mind.org.uk website they I believe have debt advise as well as tips on how to get by minute by minute.
