carers allowance what happens?

Options
Hello all,

I need to ask advise.

My uncle aged 55 recieves DLA Middle Rate Care awarded in January. His wife aged 53 works 38 hours a week bringing home £250.00.
There son lives with them( over 20) and recieves Jobseekers Allowance. My Uncle was wondering. because his son is caring for him all the time can he get carers instead of jobseekers and if so does the money for that come off his DLA as he cant get Income Support.

Many thanks in advance

  • YOur uncle would not lose any of his dla if his son were to claim carers allowance.
Also by what I can see on the direct.gov website his son would be able to claim income support instead of jobseekers allowance if he is his full time carer.

This is a link to the government website which might be some help

Thank You Johnwayne, I wasnt sure what way it worked as I know if the person in reciept of dla gets income support, they take the carers allowance from the income support.
He is a full time carer but he said that he didnt want to claim carers allowance incase his father lost money from his.

  • I cant see that happening. My son gets DLA Middle rate & I receive carer's allowance. They take the carer's allowance from my husbands job seekers allowance but they also gave him a premium on top of it so we are getting about £10 extra than normal job seekers if you add in the carers allowance. His father wont lose anything

Does the father claim any other benefit apart from DLA?

The benefits of the person you care for

If you claim Carer's Allowance, it could affect the amount of benefit the person you care for receives.
The person you care for could lose the severe disability premium in their income-related benefit or the addition for severe disability in their Pension Credit. If you only have an underlying entitlement to Carer's Allowance and are not actually paid it, this will not affect the benefits of the person you care for.

Informing the person you care for that you are making a claim

Because your claim for Carer's Allowance may affect the benefits of the person you are caring for, they need to write down on your claim form that:
    • they know you are claiming Carer's Allowance
    • you are caring for them for at least 35 hours a week

  • He won't get IS as well as carers allowance. So he would be better off staying on Jobseekers as its slightly more isn't it?

He would get IS as a top up I would have thought as carers is only £53.10.

Jobseeker's is the same amount as IS. Although, if it's contributions based, then I believe no premiums are added on?
