It's a credit account and the OP should actually read the terms and conditions of what they agreeing to.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -
while trying to buy a low cost silk scarf, where the postage was another 50% - I was trying to get it delivered to store, and kept clicking because I was thinking they haven't asked me for money yet (if store option didn't appear I was goint to bail out at the credit card input stage). Yes I ticked terms and conditions without reading them - stupid, but normally not a problem (I do a LOT of internet shopping) and as above it opened a credit account and this puts a mark on your credit file at Equifax or whereever. Although in my case this didn't matter, I was livid it had opened an account by stealth that I didn't want, and ordered a scarf that I was not ready to order! (AND you couldn't have it delivered to store on your first order!) I rang up to cancel and was told I would have to reject the delivery and when they got it back they would close the account - but it doesn't get over the fact that the credit is now on my file at equifax. This is SHARP PRACTICE by next, at the very very least and it would be nice if Martin Lewis could look in to the legality of it.
Next seem to have a lot of stupid self imposed "rules" that other shops don't have and have certainly lost my custom for good.0 -
One advantage of this is that if you have a next account and pay it off when due with a credit card you effectively get double credit terms (i.e. days from Next + days from you credit card company).
Not that I am defending Next's practices in anyway on this occasion.0 -

I think the first screen shot that has kindly been posted is awful, simply puting a link to more info! It should be spelt out loud and clear!
I'd be shocked to find out that there were not rules against this as it is very misleading, especially to those who do not use the internet to shop often as saying things like 'create account' is different to 'create credit account'
It IS spelled out loud and clear and indeed is both above and below the selection box. If people choose not to read the information at the bottom of the page that is clearly displayed, then they deserve what they get IMO.0 -
This happened to me today!!! I was on the Next website trying to order a coat and pressed the register button...somehow I ended up with a Next account.
When I rang the number to close the account, the woman told me that I would get a statement for my purchase & only when this is paid off then I can close my account.
If you send the delivery back, wouldn't that just look bad on your credit record? And wouldn't they charge you for them sending a product out only to have you refuse it???
I can't believe how dodgy they are!!! I also filled in a form online to ask them to close my account just in case they accept that I hadn't read the information properly and decide to take pity on me.0 -

Personally I would spot this. However, I do have empathy for the OP's daughter as many people would simply be seeing an option of pay nothing/pay postage! They would not be looking at the less defined information at the bottom of the screen. I would think it better if the words 'credit' and 'account' were mentioned next to it, not at the bottom of the screen.
Deserve what they get? Oh come on who reads every part of every screen when doing an internet order? I just click the boxes saying I have read the t&c's if it is a basic internet order. For all I know ASDA.com may have contracted with me and I may have agreed to play the banjo whilst wearing a pink bow tie when they deliver!
I hope you have a musical bent
I was perhaps a little harsh, but I stand by the basic message: people should read what they sign up to.0 -
I believe there are 2 important points here:
1) From the screenshots, it appears option a) is selected by default?
If this is the case, they've essencially made it so you have to opt-out of setting up a credit agreement.
2) The above decision is disguised by the way in which the information is presented.
On both counts I think what Next are doing is very wrong; if it isn't illegal, it is most certainly unethical.
I'd hope Trading Standards would agree too; has someone already reported this to them?
Would love to see this appear on Watchdog

Are you allowed to do this? I know with store cards you can't pay credit with credit so I'd be surprised if that wasn't the case here.0 -
